So you could make a compass point wherever you want (bed, beacon, random block of dirt), in any dimension as long as you bring your cartography table.
The way it would work is you place down your cartography table and put your compass in the slot. The result will be a compass that points to the exact coordinates and dimension of the cartography table it was calibrated in. The name of the compass will now be in blue to signify that it is a special compass, and will display data like the coordinates it points to and the dimension it was made in. This special compass will now only work in the dimension it was calibrated in. If you want to recalibrate the compass, just repeat the process. If you want to reset the compass to its default form then just put it in a grindstone like how you would remove enchants from enchanted gear.
