I've been thinking a lot about this recently, and I think a cool new mob for the game could Haunts. Haunts are undead zombie variants with white eyes and tattered, darker clothing. They would spawn primarily in Dark Oak Forests, as one out of every five zombies and one out of every thousand zombies in other biomes. Haunts would have 30 health and deal 3, 5 and 7 damage (depending on difficulty) along with a Weakness II effect, making them slightly more dangerous. Upon death, Haunts drop 8 experience, 0-2 rotten flesh and 0-1 spectral dust. Spectral dust is useful because, when eight of them are placed in a crafting table along with a ghast tear (for the regenerative properties), the player acquires a Return Crystal. Return Crystals are special because when a player uses (right clicks) them on a tamed mob, and that mob later dies, it'll respawn back a the player's current spawn point. This is great because players can now give their pets extra protection, so they won't be always be left behind at home for fear of dying.
Another interesting mechanic for haunts is that on full moons, they'll occasionally spawn riding zombie horses, carrying iron swords and with a swiftness I effect. This is similar to skeleton traps, but it'll definitely be an interesting find while out on a late night trip in your local Dark Oak Forest, and it'll finally add zombie horses to the base game.
