I see a posts about the Smithing Table upgrading diamond gear to netherite gear, and I'm all for it. However, I think this idea misses the same thing a lot of newer features have been missing: depth.
First, let any tool be able to be upgraded in a Smithing Table to any other material without losing enchantments. This gives it a use in all stages of the game, which keeps it from being a station you only use once and then never again.
Second, create at least five different "endgame gear" types with five different materials, each having different properties. Make it so that the Smithing Table allows us to sidegrade diamond tools to one of these without losing their enchantments.
Why a bunch of different ones? To prevent there from being a single "best" gear. Diamond for ten years, now Netherite? Any fundamental feature that gives us a straight answer as to what is best lacks all capacity for weighing pros and cons, which means the feature is lackluster at best. I've always thought that Minecraft's challenges and obstacles are primarily caused by player decisions, and not by the various mobs and traps. Please give us the ability to make more choices to determine our own challenges.
Edit: This idea is partially canon now, allowing the smithing table to upgrade diamond to netherite. Unfortunately, it's not as fully realized in the snapshots yet, but I think given time we'll see more and more "upgrades" possible with the smithing table.
