My idea is for the Blast furnace to have two smelting slots. This would make it clearer that it's smelting items faster than normal furnaces. Two slots would also allow the creation of 'alloys', most notably, netherite is an alloy of netherite scraps and gold. I think instead of just crafting, players should smelt the two together. The name could even be changed to 'Ancient Alloy' to reflect this.
Allowing players to create alloys also easily adds other metals and armor types to the game. For example, iron and coal creating steel would be an obvious addition. Pure iron armor and tools is strange, as even most medieval plate armor and tools were made of steel. The current iron armor/tools should be replaced by steel, though iron would still be used in other crafting recipes (pistons, anvils, etc.). Steel would only be for armor/tools, and maybe a few unique other crafting recipes. Steel would be the lighter gray currently used for most iron items, while iron blocks and items should be a darker grey coloring more realistic to the actual material (like anvils/hoppers). The texture changes would also help fix the issue of people wanting to use the netherite block texture when it's so difficult to collect, giving the texture (or a similar one) to iron blocks instead would make it a lot more feasible to build with.
I would love to hear your thoughts and any ideas to expand on this suggestion!
