Maybe basalt could be used to make stone tools? But I don't think basalt tools should be added.

Basalt tools could be slightly better than stone tools, and should be used by the wither skeletons as such. These tools could also be fire (not lava) resistant.

It makes sense. If we can build weapon and armor tiers in the Nether like this, it'll make more sense to live in the nether.

Also, I would vouch for basalt furnace/blast furnace crafting, and other stations that use stone with basalt. It'd be useful for a nether survival.

I expected this idea to feel like mod or crappy but wow your reasoning and logic is really great but there is an existing problem of progression in living in the nether since going through the forest then to the soul sand valley THEN to the nether fortress just to get some iron is a big travel but i doubt it matters.

Just to keep the progression going why not add an alternative for iron? Any ideas?

When basalt is combined with quartz it could create regular cobblestone, similar to how cobblestone combined with quartz creates diorite. This would allow basalt to be made into stone tools and give quartz a use.

This would make upgrading to stone tier in the nether actually possible. If not difficult. Then if stone tools could be used to mine nether gold then you could trade for iron and obsidian in order to get back to the overworld.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently. I want to be able to play the game entirely in the nether without ever having to enter the overworld. Currently the nether provides the progression of wood -> gold -> netherite-upgraded, however the only way to bridge the gap between these is by finding and looting a nether fortress. I'm fine with this being the solution for diamonds, and I actually like how iron gets skipped since gold usually gets skipped in the overworld. However I feel like there should be a natural way to get from wood to gold using only what can be found in the nether. I think Basalt could be the solution to this, with it being a slightly better version of stone that is pretty much useless, however if you don't have access to the overworld it suddenly becomes critical.

Here's a idea I had for the Basalt pickaxe:

Basically it could replace cobblestone in crafting recipes that requires cobblestone

I think this would make nether survival more fair in the Nether but still fairly challenging

Also, I believe Basalt should be used to make furnaces so that you can smelt items such as ancient debris when doing something such as a nether survival challenge.

Nether Gold Ore should not be mineable by wood pickaxes, instead implement basalt tools (stone level) that can break nether gold ore.

Basalt pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe, sword

Nether-based tool blocks would be neat but there is a simpler solution. Basalt as a crafting ingredient in replacement of any recipe using Cobblestone and Smooth Basalt replacing Stone. This includes furnace, blast furnace, stonecutter, grinder, brewing stand.

Same level as Stone tools and weapon, could even just be a Stone type tool with an nbt tag of Basalt in order to have a different texture.

Everyone wants to live in the Nether now and this adds the flavor and the ability to do so!

As most have been saying, basalt should be used as the alternative to cobblestone in crafting. This could help make gold collection more efficient before you can get the fortune enchantment because you can smelt the gold ore to get the bars. You need cobblestone to craft a furnace, but basalt could be a solid alternative. Wood and gold tools burn out quickly, so stone tools made from basalt are another good alternative solution. In the crafting recipe for the grindstone, you need smooth stone, so smooth basalt could be used instead.

The only problem that I see is that basalt is found in the soul sand valley, which is VERY DANGEROUS. Gold should still be mined by a wood pick, but basalt is still a good alternative nonetheless, even if it takes a lot of effort to get to that point. Of course if you are in the Nether from the Overworld, you have at least iron tools and armor, so you can skip that crucial stage. In the instance that you want to start in the Nether, though, then this should be taken into consideration. Remember: Make the Nether hospitable, but not livable; add all the necessities, but make it a challenge to get them, like basalt.

With this brand new basalt (or basalt based stone) tools only nether survivals would be more interesting to play and watch! But I'm not a fan of basalt armor. Just tools.
