This was inspired when I was watching Hermitcrafter GoodTimesWithScar making one of his conduit decorations: He lamented the fact that the night-vision granted by the conduit messed with the dark and mysterious underwater vibe he enjoyed while building the area under his island. Losing that feel was disappointing to him as a player, and me as a viewer.
So I believe players should have some control of the ambiance of certain areas, perhaps limited to the range (and subsequently altered by) Beacons and Conduits. The ability to have a dark and gloomy underwater feel while still retaining the powers of a conduit- create the muddy swamp ambiance for your sunken castle ruins, create a minty-green fog for your enchanted forest, create the reddish din of the nether in the overworld. Having this (limited) control over the ambiance of your build will allow players to greatly enhance their look and feel.
An interface for the conduit has the additional benefit of giving more information about how to build them (and what you need to increase their range). Either way, spending resources such as colored dye and phantom membranes for fog effects in the Beacon(/Conduit) interface would be how the player utilizes this feature.
