I really like this idea; it allows for more complex music in minecraft.

I think wool would be better for a muffling effect, given the recent Wool Occlusion mechanic. I'd be most excited with the glass pane idea so that note blocks could have some degree of sustain to their sound - as-is, they are very staccato (short-lived tones), which makes many slower songs harder to translate into note blocks. Not sure how the leaves/noise idea would work with all the different types of instruments now in the game, but the glowstone echo could be cool too.

due to new added copper, they could be copper pipes that make the note longer

It would also be nice to have an update to how the actual sounds produced, although that isn't very important. Texture packs could be used to help with that a little.

    Great idea!

There are two aspects of note blocks that I would like to see being modifiable (either by putting a block on top/below or including it in the recipe)

    1) Direction of sound - skulk block - Putting a skulk block on top of the note block (or including it in the recipe, or through enchantments or the insertion of music sheets into the note block) should make the note a surround sound, rather than a directional one.
I have tried my hand at creating an ambient environment (a tavern) with music. Unfortunately, the illusion was quickly dispelled by the fact that you need to look in the general direction of where the notes are playing for the sound to work as intended. Following a redstone contraption to hear a piece of music only works for a video about itself, but does not actually fit into the context of the game. It would be great to have a way to modify the direction, and doing it with a skulk block makes sense in my mind as it would add to the scare-factor that this block can make sound appear in your head rather than from a direction.

    2) Fade by distance - Putting something on top (or the other previously mentioned methods) (e.g. copper pipes https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360050470971/comments/360014481171) should enable controlling either how far the sounds can be heard or the level of fade. It would help with making longer pieces that one can listen to in a single spot. It should be possible to combine it with the surround sound mode.
