There should be a mini map that fills in as the player explores, nothing but the player will show up on the mini map until the area is explored by the player, after the area is explored the mini map will show the terrain, buildings, which will update when the terrain is terraformed by players, when buildings are built or destroyed, treasure maps should automatically be added to the mini map, a fast travel(waypoint)system should be available to set up when a player has already explored the area, but not when the area is unexplored, all can be set up to be turned on when creating the world, when an area is explored the mini map will show neutral mobs(in white), friendly mobs(in green), and hostile mobs(in red) and the player in whatever color the player chooses.
