There has been many suggestions on people wanting to manually link Nether Portals but their ideas tends to need new blocks or is complicated. My idea is to use the Name Tag item instead to give the portals a ID that will make it easy to know what portal links to what or force two or more portals to connect.
The way it would work is when holding a Name Tag that has been given a name in your hand, click the use button while facing a Nether Portal's purple portal to apply it. the portal will now show its name at the top of it when facing the portal.
Now any portal with that same name will be linked together. If you go through a portal and the other dimension has multiple portals with the same name, you will have an equal chance of randomly spawning at any of those portals with same name. If a named portal has no portal in the other dimension with the same name or the player enters an unnamed portal, then the portal will use the normal portal mechanics that we currently have now.
The big benefits to using Name Tags on portals is it will make connecting portals more intuitive, gives another helpful use to Name tags that players may be stockpiling, and can make it much much easier to make mini-games or maps with stages/levels without the use of Command Blocks as portals can be used to teleport players to specific rooms.
I hope this idea gets considered as it would be a major quality-of-life improvement to Minecraft's current Nether Portal system.
