Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

Barb Wire

So, another way that could you can protect your base is with barbwire. It would deal damage, similar to the bush, to mobs and even players (so be cautious), and cause a bleeding effect for 5 seconds. To craft it, you would need 2 iron bars to craft it. The barbwire can be stacked and built on top of one another. You can walk through it, though you would be slowed down the same when walking through a bush or cobweb. It could also be useful as decoration when creating military bases, training camps, or a battlefield. You'll still be able to shoot arrows through, though it would slow down tremendously, causing the arrow to not go as far as intended. It may be a bit expensive with iron, though could prove effective against villager raids. You can only break barb wire with iron pickaxes and above, and are vulnerable to TNT & creeper explosions.

    The berry bush already does this fine. If you're looking for something that looks like barbed wire, try dead coral (Not the block, the plant like ones.)

    This would be pretty cool. I was thinking more just a tripwire variant that is crafted with string and iron nuggets and would function like tripwire but would damage the player if they walk on it

    If you crafted it with wood planks you could stretch it into fence and create western/rural builds. I think the bleeding effect would be neat, but I think it would be logically inconsistent with Minecraft's existing logic. If arrows and swords don't make you bleed I don't think wire should either. A barbed wire fence doesn't necessarily have to deal damage, it would just be 1.5 blocks tall and add the new aesthetic, I do think that if it dealt damage that would also be cool, but hostile AI's would need updating to keep them from pushing against it. Coils of barbed wire, which I think is what you are describing, could just use the existing programming used for thorn bushes.
