This suggestion may help place the campfire as being a better early game block to consider in early game survival while also giving builders easy access to the unlit version of the campfire.
Currently Coal/Charcoal are needed as part of the recipe. As such I would already have to have a furnace to get charcoal or even coal since I had to get cobble for the furnace. This makes me less likey to craft it unless I need a smoke signal.
The user Enduhh had posted an idea of having campfires unlit by default (https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360043943292-Campfires-Should-Be-Unlit-By-Default)
Let's expand on that. Why not have two recipes for campfires that give two different states for it: Lit and Unlit? If you use the coal/charcoal it will be lit like it is currently. If you use (Saplings, paper, etc) it would be unlit. You could then use two sticks (one in each hand) to try and start the campfire. Not instant, but after a few random seconds.
This could then give builders and map makers easy access to the unlit campfire for decoration or survival based maps.
