When I first saw a barrel in a village I was fully expecting it to act in a similar way to a Shulker box, however, I quickly learned that was not the case. In real life, barrels are used to transport items as well as to store them, so It would make sense for them to do that in game as well.
Of course, in order to make this balanced, we would have to change a few things.
- The crafting recipe of the barrel should include two iron ingots replacing the wooden planks on either side of the middle row. In real life, barrels are held together by metal bars, and the texture for barrels reflects this, so it would both make sense and make this block a bit more expensive.
- Barrels should only only hold 9 items. This is a third of what the Shulker box can hold.
- Barrels should no longer stack, being limited to one per inventory slot. This also makes a lot of sense, seeing how barrels are quit large and heavy in real life.
Also, Barrels burn which add a risk to using this cheaper, easier to obtain counterpart to the Shulker box. If you aren't careful, you could lose your items.
Of course, this may need tweaking, however, I feel it would be a great addition to the game which would make transporting items and looting structures a lot easier early on.
