This idea comes from a remark from Pakratt.
This is paraphrasing what he said, not his exact words:
"Would be nice to have a man-made building and not have to place torches/lighting everywhere, just to keep Creepers from blowing everything up."
I do agree that it is a hassle to not have hostile mobs spawn in your home.
I do understand that the Survival gameplay is meant to be challenging and the devs want players to use existing blocks to be creative, like placing light emitting blocks, or avert mob spawning with using blocks that don't allow mob spawning.
Sometimes I have to sacrifice a design I want, in favor for not having unwanted mobs from spawning.
I might come up with an interesting design in the process, but still not what I was after.
Personally I like moody lighting in my builds, like using torches sparingly, or using dim sources of light, like Redstone Torches.
The drawback is I will get the occasional mob and even mob greifing to my build cause I was surprised by a Creeper.
There is an existing mechanic where the game recognizes a valid home in a village. The old mechanic was a door and a 'roof'.
Perhaps there can be a new set of rules to meet, to have new mechanic the game would recognize as a player's home.
Like a valid players home must have a bed that is slept in, to mark that it belongs to the player. Then the bed must also have a roof and a basic set of blocks with GUI overlays that the player can claim as part of the home, like a chest, furnace, crafting table, or even an Ender Chest.
The blocks can have a requirement to be within a certain distance of each other and the upside is that the valid home will not spawn hostile mobs with a radius. Be it a cubed area, or a chunk radius and from bedrock to build limit.
Perhaps if all perimeters are met, the changes take effect immediately and the players home has ticks that the game checks to make sure the home is still valid.
Once satisfied, it could require no other action to keep the anti-mob spawning, or perhaps there is a meter, or other conditions to be met, to refresh the homes anti-hostile mob defenses.
That can be something like the blocks need the player to interact with them over a certain time, or over a certain period of ticks and once the player interacts with them, it refreshes the meter.
Of course, I'm not talking about once every 5 minutes, I mean something more like over the course of tens of thousands of ticks, something that would last a several hours, or longer in real time when the the chunks are loaded.
A time span that would not be too much of a hindrance, or completely distracting from the rest of the game play, but still need attention over a long enough period.
The anti-hostile mob mechanic could be an effect, like the kind of effects a player can get from being in range of an active beacon, or a conduit.
Or a valid players home could spawn in some unique block, or mob and the player must restore the block, or entities requirements to keep the effect active and refreshed.
I feel like some work involved would still require some effort on the players part, as a trade off. No hostile mobs, in exchange for a little work.
For players that like to build in survival, the radius could be sometime worth while that gives them freedom to have the lighting they want and not over inundated with torches, or light levels that would rather have control over.
In exchange for a little room dedicated as a valid players home.
The effect could be broken by not meeting conditions with blocks that are broken, or some kind of meter that needs refreshing.
