War Hammers could be crafted with one stick and one ore block (or log for a wooden hammer). Each hammer does slightly more damage than a sword. However, there is another attack you can perform by using the hammer instead of hitting with it; the smash attack. It would charge the hammer up, and when you let go it slams the ground. Everyone in a radius around you takes knockback. The longer you charge it, the larger the radius (to a certain degree, of course). The fully charged version would be 7 blocks. The longer it's charged, the more damage it does to you (or this could be a loss of hunger instead). This could also get new enchantments and give use to iron, gold, and diamond blocks.
Possible enchantments:
Shockwave: increases smash range
Bludgeon: does more damage
Throw: Charging it now throws the hammer.
Crush: The smash attack now breaks blocks.
