Intro: Magic and Combat seem to be coming to Mojang's forefront, and their balancing is going to be important.
Idea: The whole magic portion will be based off of 'weapon dipping'. You will be able to dip a weapon in a cauldron full of some kind of potion, causing the cauldron's amount of potion to decrease or be emptied. After your weapon was dipped in the potion, it will retain the potion effect for a certain amount of uses.
New attack: The new attack associated with the potion dipped weapons will be Spell. While your weapon is dipped, Spell will replace either Ground Pound or Sweeping Edge. If Spell replaces Ground Pound, then a weakened effect will splash the area in a certain radius. When Spell replaces Sweeping Edge, it will send a single line of a slightly stronger effect at a single enemy. Tridents will not have the ability to be dipped. The bow already has dipped arrows that will be useable.
Spell tiers: The current tiers of weapon will still exist, however, while Diamond has the highest physical damage, Gold will be the new Top Tier for magic. There will have to be a new tier of weapon and armor, as well, Silver, serving as the lower tier of Magic based weaponry. It will have other uses as well, and I will dedicate a post solely to silver.
Weapon Stats:
THE DAMAGE TIERS
Diamond-Stays the same. Can only have 3 Spell attacks, and loses a large amount of durability each time.
Iron-Does slightly more damage than it does now, is slightly more rare of an ore, and has a maximum Spell capacity of 4 or 5. It will lose slightly less durability than diamond per attack.
THE SPEED TIERS
Wood- Very fast attack. Cool down is negligible. Damage is slightly decreased. Spell capacity is 7 and moderate durability is taken every time a spell is used.
Stone- Slightly slower attack speed than wood. Damage is slightly less than now.
MAGIC TIERS:
Silver-Damage is closer to the current damage of Iron than that of stone or gold. Its durability is closer to Gold or Stone than Iron though. It has a capacity of 13 Spells and sustains low durability damage from using Spells.
Gold- It keeps its old stats in terms of damage delivered. Holds a capacity of 16 Spells and sustains low durability damage from Spell use.
Armor Stats:
DAMAGE TIERS:
Diamond- High weight (slows you down) Very low magic resistance.
Iron- Moderate weight (slows you down a little) Low Magic resistance.
SPEED TIERS:
Leather-Low weight (doesn't slow you down) Low Magic resistance.
Chainmail- Low weight. Low Magic resistance.
MAGIC TIERS:
Silver-Moderate weight. Moderate Magic resistance. Physical Armor points are just below Iron.
Gold- High weight. High Magic resistance.
PVE:
The mobs can also benefit from using these mechanics and weapons. The zombies can occasionally spawn with potion dipped weapons, and the Wither Skeletons will drop their Wither dipped stone swords, which cannot be obtained elsewhere. The vindicators could sometimes use potion dipped axes, adding variety to the fight. Mobs added after this update could be centered around this system as well.
Closing Statment:
These new mechanics will introduce new ways of fighting in the game. The armor decides who you will be fighting: a Magician? Use Gold; a heavy hitter? Use Diamond.
Not only that, but it also allows people to consider using the lower tier armor, if they want to be fast, they would use the lower tier armor. It would open up all sorts of new play styles in the game, instead of a homogeneous diamond decked pvp style.
