I think this post is going to become obsolete now that Mojang is looking into combat. I'm excited that they will finally fix it, apprehensive that Mojang might leave us with a substandard combat system again, and disappointed that my idea didn't gain traction. I will post some new suggestions and concerns to the snapshot portion.

I don't know about weapon dipping to give your swords the ability to do magical attacks but more along the lines of possible new magical tools altogether. We already have enchantments that can make your arrows become on fire, I think the closest thing to magic we will get will be along the lines of new enchantments or a new system/table that is in the same style as the enchantment table for new magical tools or abilities/enchantments.

I thought of weapon dipping because of the current dipped arrows. This system would fit very well in the current system, and making the different materials have more viability, it would make people have more flexibility in choosing combat styles, perhaps a spell caster who uses a gold sword who wears a diamond suit. I guess he’d fight a person with full diamond. A player could fully customize his playstyle, pretty much making infinite possibilities for combat, which is currently limited to diamond everything and clicking and jumping.

also i think that it should be enchants instead of dipping because mojang doesn't want to have to code a multi layer mechanic if they could just use add on to one they already have but i still really like the idea

DearHealer726, what would the enchantment system work like? I am basing the dipping system off of the dipped arrows. I’m sure there could be enchantments that can tie into it, however. I think that Mojang could code it similarly to the way they coded the Tropical Fish Bucket, if they really need to, but I think that will not be required. Thank you for the feedback, and please clarify.

I feel like this would be a good time to introduce a staff into the game. It could be made with two sticks, and another block on top (Diamond tip would be better than iron, gold, and so on.) The top of the staff should be an entire block of resource, so it's not too easy to get. Like a block of diamond, block of emerald, block of gold, block of iron.

Perhaps this staff could be "dipped" like they are saying above, or they could have a new enchantment table with different types of spells and some of the older enchants.

Ex: Diamond Staff- Unbreaking Three, Mending, Fireball.

Ex: Golden Staff- Unbreaking Three, Mending, Shock.

This staff would allow you to shoot a magic ability of your enchantment choosing, while still utilizing much of the already existing features. Of course the top block would determine durability, the power of enchantments, and such like it does in the game now. Perhaps every time you used a spell, it would take some of your exp levels as a way to power your new weapon, and keep yourself continuing the game.

I think there should be non weapon based spells. I would also like more weapons, such as mauls. Crafting: stick, chain, and wood, stone, iron, gold, etc.

I like the weapon dipping. Everything else may get a bit complicated

There are some cool ideas there, I want to emphatize in a pair of them:

Adding effectime downsides to using armor and giving more use to gold armor: Honestly, I've always felt weird that putting on a huge and very heavy full plated diamond armor and not having your speed or mobility affected. Moreover, giving Gold the property of protecting you better against magic damage is one of the coolest ideas I have ever seen, I may writte an entire post dedicated to this.

Spell Blades/Weapons: Honestly, that was a cool idea but I will give it a tweak. Submerging a sword or any other weapon into a cauldron full with a potion effect should absorb all the cauldron and change the weapon into a spell blade/weapon. The rest would be as you say.

Dipping isn't really magic in my opinion. The staff idea is long over due for magic (arts of conjure, destruction ect) to be introduced. But why stop at just staffs which simply can cast projectiles of certain elements, but why not utilize the free hand to hold arcane books, and having the fist (like Skyrim) have a color glow or flame. Experience bar would be the mana or add in a new bar and some sort of charging block that uses lapiz or redstone as source of power or mana potions. My world is long over due for a decent mages guild. (Thinking like Morrowind - teleportation, levitate, summon, destruction. Enchanting is a lower form a magic (smithing/arcane) same as with alchemy. We need the more respected arcane arts. Staff, Books, Wands, Robes... Just my opinion, Because dipping is more like putting poison on a blade then "magic"...

Keep stacking and remember to blink! ;)

I was going to post something like this. Jeb has been working on a combat update, so magic could also receive an update.
