I like the idea of them being toggleable instead, as some people like them the way they are. Perhaps with a rightclick you could toggle their two states.

I like this Idea because then if you were going to bed then you could turn the lantern off so that it’s dark

I would love to be able to toggle lanterns. I build in creative, with the mobSpawning gamerule set to false. I build cities and towns with the help of MCEdit and Amulet Editor. I also use the ever useful debug tool to get details right. Lanterns would be an immensely helpful detail for houses and offices. Smaller interiors of these buildings cannot afford to use redstone lighting. In larger buildings like theatres and schools, I can hide the redstone wiring in the structure, or I can use the debug stick to turn the lights on. At the moment lanterns are an unrealistic detail to add to my small interiors without the ability to turn them off.

One problem in survival with toggling a lantern is the light source is being turned off, opening the area up to mob spawning. It would not be practical to have unlit areas in survival.

Once again, I really want this to be a feature. I would not be a fan of the lantern being powered by redstone signal, however, as having a lever next to the lantern, or redstone dust trailing away from it would be messy. I want to be able to right click the lantern to turn it on or off. It would be consistent with the real life behavior of lanterns, as you can turn them on and off in real life. This would give the lantern more value and set it apart from the rest of the light sources--torches and glowstone can't be toggled, redstone lamps can be with redstone signal, and lanterns can be with a right click.

I think lanterns should be toggleable and light up in your hand. Although, this would get annoying when building. Therefore, it would be by default deactivated and in 2D item form. When it is used, it will turn into a 3D model and light up your surroundings. It might be useful for adventuring in the dark without leaving a trail of torches wherever you go.
