My suggestion for the the smithing table would be to move some of the enchantments over to being craftable with the smithing table. For example, upon creating a tool, you would be able to add some more material and use up a level or two of XP to add stuff like efficiency, and unbreaking maybe even silk touch to the tools. This would be really nice to be able to upgrade the mid tier tools without feeling like you're wasting a ton of resources.
You could leave it kind of bland and random like the enchantment table, or you could even play with the idea of depending what material you add would give you a different effect. Such as adding an iron ingot would add unbreaking, a Gold Ingot could add silk touch, and flint would add efficiency. Also perhaps depending on how much XP you use would determine the level of the enchantment.
Of course things like fire aspect, looting or knockback should stay enchantments, but it would be really nice to be able to upgrade the mid tier tools without feeling like you're wasting a ton of resources, and time.
