When potato crops are harvested by villagers they don't collect the poisonous potatoes that are dropped. Instead, the potatoes are left on the ground and eventually disappear within 5 minutes, so a player can miss out on potentially collecting poisonous potatoes.
I suggest that villagers should pick these potatoes up and share them with each other, but instead of using them to become willing to breed, they should throw them at players who have an extremely low reputation within the village(around -15, the same level at which iron golems become hostile to players). They should be thrown like snowballs and eggs and deal 1 damage to the player.
Villagers should only throw potatoes at players when gossiping at meeting points, and the player should be unable to trade with them at that time(the player should have opportunities to trade with them when they are working at their stations in order to rebuild their reputation). Villagers, Iron Golems and Wandering Traders should be immune to the potatoes, but every other mob should be damaged if the player dodges the potato onslaught. If a villager does not have poisonous potatoes they should grunt (the same noise as when they deny trades from a player), shake their head and produce 'angry' particles instead.
Aside from being silly and funny, there are some reasons why I believe this should be added:
- Gives poisonous potatoes another use other than being used as a dangerous food item.
- Gives players a clear indication that a village is hostile, and golems will attack them.
- Gives players an incentive to treat villagers with respect.
- Gives villagers a bit of a defensive side - villagers are quite cowardly and do nothing aside from raising trade prices when attacked. It also gives them a bit more personality, in my opinion. I also think it would be a sort of adorable way of retaliation, which suits villagers.
This would also cause the currently unused death message 'Player/Mob was pummeled by Player/Mob' to be used. Seeing 'Player was pummeled by Villager' would be entertaining to see without context. Perhaps they could also throw them at hostile mobs like zombies and illagers but I think that removes the point of the player trying to protect them from said mobs - I prefer the idea of the 'shame throwing' concept more.
The player does not need to worry about the villagers inventory filling up with poisonous potatoes due to the rarity of them, but as a safe measure they should throw away any poisonous potatoes that they are holding if it prevents them from picking up food/seeds. Another precaution could be that all villagers carry a theoretical infinite supply of these potatoes(like snow golems with snowballs, skeletons with arrows, witches with potions etc.) so they never run out.
