One of the biggest flaws imo when it comes to armor and tools in Minecraft is that once you have diamonds pretty much every equipment of lesser materials become obsolete which means that the leather color mechanic is useless other than for role playing, iron becomes usable only if you die far away and need some quick cheap armor to retrieve your items, and don't even get me started on gold items. These flaws have been okay considering that combat is very basic in Minecraft but it begs the question why even bother with gold tools or leather at all?
>To make armor more useful I would suggest that all armor starts with a base leather one to which you could add color and potentially use banners to further customize the look.
>The base armor could then be upgrade with Iron, gold or lapis (or any of the materials in the game to be fair this isn't written in stone). Iron increasing protection, gold making the armor lighter (higher speed, jumping, and flying abilities at the expense of protection), and lapis giving the armor more room for a potential magic system enhancement (kinda like a magician having robes, but this goes into magic system territory so I'll leave this to your imagination).
>diamonds and emerald could then be used to get the higher tiers for the armor, diamonds increasing durability and protection further, and emeralds enhancing any potential effects of any prior armor effects.(the way the materials are use, you guys decide, the main point is the tiered system is to make all material less obsolete)
>For the tools the same is applied but instead of using wood as the base (wood tool should still be there for the very beginning ) Iron should be the base.
> to upgrade tools and weapons, items like blaze rods or other mob drops could be used. Blaze rods obviously giving the weapon fire aspect. Nautilus shells adding some water effect, ETC. weapon attack and speed can be upgraded with EXP points.
>of course as with armor, diamonds can increase the durability and Maximum Attack, emeralds can be used to increase the effects like the fire aspect of a weapon or multishot of a crossbow (say from 2 bolts to 3 after emeralds are used).
These changes would give new life to some of the materials but also give each armor and weapon a personal touch since you actually have to put effort in making the higher tier equipment plus now you have more options in how you decide to make your own armor and weapons.
