The idea would be to create a block of slate that naturally generates in taiga biomes. Once mined, it could be crafted into a "tile block", which could have stair and slab variants. The generation could be the same as for andesite, diorite and granite, just limited to said specific biomes.
Slate is commonly used IRL as roof blocks, so it would be a nice aesthetic addition to minecraft and an added incentive to go explore said biomes. The block would be of a dark grey tone, with the natural block being of a similar texture to andesite, and the tile block looking like a tiled roof (example would be the gray terracotta in conquest texture pack).
Now on to more risky thoughts: the tile could be dyed in all 16 colours to add a variety of roof coloring. Conversely, the natural block could drop tile shards instead of the block directly; thus, the shards could be used not only to craft "tile blocks", but to craft new objects like blackboards.
