Simple suggestion - a barrier block that only blocks specific entities.
For example: "Player Barrier" only blocks Player entities from passing through, while enemy mobs and other entities such as arrows or potions do pass through.
Other possibilities would be a "Hostile Mob Barrier", "Friendly Mob Barrier", "All Mob Barrier", etc.
Alternatively, a barrier block could have nbt data specifying the entities it allows to pass through it - but I'm not certain about the feasibility of that idea.
The benefits of this are primarily for map builders and especially in the case of blocking players, as there are numerous ways to block most entities but not players, and not hostile mobs. It allows for more control of the player while still allowing long-range items such as tridents and arrows to be launched elsewhere. Similarly, it would allow for enemies such as blazes and skeletons to fire their projectiles at the player while not allowing them or the player to come within melee distance, without the need for a large pit or tight holes to allow these projectiles through while restricting mob and player movement.
