Nether stars are so hard to get! They need to do something better. I think the beacon is a perfect teleport block. 'Beacon' even sounds like you should be able to teleport to it, like in that map mod with waypoints. I think you should stand on a beacon block, select another beacon and then click to teleport. The beacon already has a UI so it could be modified to allow you to activate it. Perhaps each teleport require one ender pearl to be put into the beacon.

I love this idea! I have two changes, though:

First, I think it should cost resources for each use, not just to build. I'm thinking it should require a number of ender pearls based on the distance. Something like p = sqrt(d/256), where p is the number of ender pearls, and d is the distance between the two portals. So the pattern would look something like this:

    • 1 pearl (p) gets up to 256 blocks (d)
    • 2, up to 1024
    • 3, up to 9216
    • ...
    • 16 (max) up to 65,536 blocks

I'm envisioning a UI kind of like a hopper or dispenser, where the player could store pearls for future use. The player could also feed pearls into the teleporter with a hopper. To avoid abuse this form of transport would have to be prohibited in the Nether, and telepads in the End could not connect to telepads in the Overworld.

Second, this absolutely needs to be limited to end game players who have been to the end. I think an appropriate recipe would require purpur. The crafting recipe would look something like this:

    O O O

    P D P

    P N P

    (O = blank, N = nether star, P = purpur block, D = diamond)

If developers feel this recipe should be more costly, they could require a diamond block instead of a single diamond, and shulker shells instead of purpur.

@Martin Nether stars are hard to get, but the ability to teleport is very powerful. Requiring players to choose between a beacon or a teleporter, instead of giving them both for free, means they have to make an interesting gameplay decision based on their particular situation and needs.

I had a very similar idea, however the crafting recipie was:

    NDN
    DSD
    OOO

    Where:

    • N = Nothing
    • D = Diamond
    • S = Nether Star
    • O = Obsidian

And each portal had two words: one to identify itself and another to identify its destination. That way "a" can go to "b" which can go to "c" which can go back to "a".

And in my idea the teleporter was a block that would go above a nether portal like shape that was made of iron blocks.

I also agree with @Galiantus idea about putting ender pearls into the teleporter to change the maximum distance.

Also, the portal would be an immovable block in JE and movable in BE.
