So you know how when the logs of a tree are destroyed the leaves start dying? There should be a reverse where if you destroy the leaves while leaving the trunk intact, they'll slowly grow back.
I want to see this implemented so if one wanted to make an apple farm similar to ones in Michigan (I'm from Michigan), they could do so!
How I could see this being implemented is similar to the structure blocks, giving the different variations of trees their own value and have the tree remember it's original shape and know that when a leaf block is destroyed that it needs to use the random tick function to see when it needs to be restored back to its original shape!
Possible downsides:
Forest paths utilizing trees as cover will slowly be filled
Solution: build your own replica of the trees from trunk up, the natural regeneration should only affect naturally spawning trees!
