With the proposed Cartography table, it would be cool if we could do more with maps by adding specific materials to a map:
For example adding <item> would highlight certain structures within an explored area -
- Specific wood to outline/tint that specific biome
- Emeralds would outline village extents
- Cactus would put an icon on for desert temples
- Prismarine shard would put an icon on for an Ocean Monument
- Gold Bar would put a treasure chest icon on the map
- Boat would highlight a wreck
Adding in a compass would overlay the map's coordinates on the corner of the map (and add to it's description text)
You could also add dyes to change the display style of a map:
- White - normal/satellite view
- Blue - ocean/mariner's style chart with depth of blocks being darker shades
- Green - explorer's style with height of blocks being lighter shades
- Grey - spelunker's style highlighting cave entrances
- Orange - political style outlining the change in biomes
- Brown - village style where each house is outlined and scenery ignored.
It would also be really cool if treasure maps kept their crinkly edge when placed in a frame (without turning into "normal" edge-less maps)
As a function of the Cartography table and duping/expanding maps: if you could put a zoomed out map as source map then you could choose the zoom factor for any new maps created from it (Slider below map on GUI?). Putting in a single map you would have to select an area on the GUI. If you put in the number of maps needed to cover the whole map area at that zoom factor, it would automatically create them all.
