This may be more suitable for the blocks section, but as it depends on biome temp, I figured it was better for here.
I propose certain crops that will only grow in certain biome temperatures. Not just be found, but only grow (or maybe only thrive) in certain areas.
For example, orange trees. A citrus tree that requires high temperatures. And as such, it would really only do well in the warmer biomes, like jungle, plains, and so on. Maybe biomes with a temp of .8 or greater. It could use a similar process with the berries, where each block of leaves matures to have an orange that is pickable rather than needing to break leaves like apples.
Cool weather crops would be things like beets, turnips (which we already have) or certain leafy greens, and these could grow in biomes with a temp of, say, .5 or lower. Or perhaps Cherries. They do well in colder climes, and could also use a sweetberry-like mechanic for their fruiting.
This would encourage not just exploration, but exploitation, giving people a reason to linger in different biomes, while not being so prohibitively difficult that you must hang out in one specific biome and if you don't get it generated nearby you're out of luck.
