Gem Effects on Tools

Honestly, the current tools are fine, but there's no variation.

You get stone, you never go back to wood. Get diamond, who needs iron?

 

There should be new gems that, instead of being "better", should give certain effects.
I don't care how this is pulled off, but, for example...

There could be pickaxes that mine blocks at the same speed (maybe like stone pick breaking stone block?). Not very useful for stone, but way quicker for ores.

Swords that do 100% of the damage they do to the main target to monsters struck with the swing effect (You know, where 2 nearby mobs get hurt too?)

Tools that automatically have silk touch but are as fast as wood tools

 

Tiers aren't as fun as strategically picking the best tool

    I think that instead, they should keep the wood-stone-iron-diamond system but add new non-tiered tools with special abilities.  I don't think anyone would use a tool that automatically has silk touch but mines as quickly as wooden tools because why not just enchant a diamond tool with silk touch?
