It should be specific to the new Nether biomes and you get different room/room possibilities depending on which type it is, much like they did with 1.14 villages.

Of course, they need color variants, like in Cubfan135's video.

Also, Nether Fortresses should make use of Red and Blue Nether Bricks instead of just the normal Nether Bricks. Perhaps, whenever the fortress cuts into a Crimson Forest, the blocks are all Red Nether Bricks. Likewise, there should be a Blue Nether Brick block for when the fortress cuts into a Warped Forest.

Bring out a new Underworld of Color!

I agree, I would also like to add that other than blazes there should an items/mobs that only spawn in nether fortresses. This would give players a reason to go explore and find the nether fortresses.

Here are a few ideas I came up with

Nether star shard- Littered throughout nether fortresses are star holder (empty beacons with a shard). The player would have to fight a star guardian which is a brand of wither skeletons with armor. They would drop keys to open the holders. Put four nether star shards in a crafting table and get a formed nether star.

Chains- Nether fortresses would have hanging chains. The player can use these chains in crafting chain-mail armor, or just use them for decoration.

Sulfur pools- Toxic to the touch they spawn as falling traps for those unlucky explores who fall. You can bucket the sulfur for a short time before it breaks the bucket. Only gold buckets can pick up sulfur. A bucket of sulfur can be used to increase how much smelting can be done. One bucket of sulfur allows 3 stacks of items to smelt in one given moment. Buckets of sulfur when they hit water evaporates the water. When sulfur hits lava, the sulfur would disappear.

Absolutely. Nether fortresses are outdated and need an overhaul. Perhaps Mojang could incorporate some forms of visually distinct mob zones, kind of like different wings to the fortresses. Wither skeleton areas, complete with withering nether bricks, Blaze areas with melted floors, walls, etc, Piglin bastions which are generally tribal-looking. The current nether fortress design and aesthetic doesn't fit in with the style of mobs now prevalent in the Nether.

Also, the Casual Friday 20w07a stream came off as kind of pompous and condescending. Fans obviously want more content than just mobs and some tiny biomes. This is the "Nether Update". Make it grand. Have the Nether be more than just a weird progression stepping stone. Actually make the dimension complex, interesting, and able to rival the Overworld as a viable option for long term play.

Nether forteresses really need an overall. They are just bland and boring, we need more stuff in them either in room or in loot (maybe even in boss). I do worry they won’t update it though.

I wholeheartedly agree when updating the Nether the Nether fortress' should be the first thing they update here are some screen shots of my ideas for a nether fortress inhabited by Piglings. I mostly just updated the existing fortress and added two new structures the courtyard(top picture) and the Keep (second picture on the left side). Please disregard that in some pictures the nether bricks are black these are older files uploaded due to upload size.

Even if the nether fortress remains very similar in shape, I think that the incorporation of red nether brick and lanterns would be great. A black-colored nether fortress designed for wither skeletons with soul-fire lanterns would also be cool. (I'm kinda connecting how Piglins currently hate wither skeletons and soul-fire lanterns.) I don't think new blocks would be needed for the wither skeleton structure, because coal seems to be connected to wither skeletons. I don't think this large amount of coal would be unfair considering the nether is full of lava and lava does the same things that coal does. (Fuel and lighting.) With all the new blocks and features being added to the game, I believe that the nether fortress has great potential.

Edit: Wow! I love the new biome added to Minecraft in a snapshot (The basalt delta). Maybe this dark variant of the nether fortress I mentioned could be made from Blackstone instead of coal... Surely would look better. I'd also love to see some Blackstone included in the design of the normal nether fortress. I also wanted to add that I love how much detail the village houses got in 1.14 and I kinda expect to see similar amounts of detail in the nether fortress if it were to get updated. I love the direction Minecraft is taking as a game, but it would be a bit disappointing to have the fortresses not updated in the Nether Update. (Still one of my favorite games, though.)

WE NEED Nether fortresses updated. Now when the Nether update is being made, there is no better time. Update it with the new block like red nether bricks, nether wood, blue torches/lanterns, nether vines, etc. Nether fortresses desperately need new design. PLEASE! :D

So I think there is more people who want a new nether fortresses then people who want to keep the old ones but I think I have a solution! Keep the current ones but make them look old and falling apart and add new upgraded ones that maybe look like the pictures above this comment.

I was thinking maybe another idea would be to change the flooring to a different color something like warped fungus blocks or crimson fungus blocks in place of nether brick while keeping the nether brick to the left and the right. This would give the game a bit of color. This looks very good on open bridges, or even the closed ones.

Its a small change but structurally the old nether fortress need a bit of a makeover.

Utilising red nether bricks, the whole range of slabs stairs and walls would really help to add some character to an otherwise boring structure. Nether fortresses are mandatory to progress, why are they so bland?

What if there is a rare dead white variant of nether fortress? It would fit in nether colors, an I bet it would look epic

The whole nether is getting remade and the fortress isn’t. That’s almost unsettling. Right now there’s a lot of talk at mojang about changing creeper explosion damage in water while they need to be spending their time on updating the fortress. No one one this planet who has ever been to the nether is going to object to mojang making it look better and giving it more rooms ect. P.l.e.a.s.e. Mojang update the fortress too

It's really frustrating how they keep talking about how "oh, you shouldn't worry! we're not touching the fortresses! they won't change! don't worry, guys! we know that you don't want this updated!" when... ya know... the thing looks and feels so bland, especially with all the cool stuff they're adding.

Just adding Red Nether Brick to the structure would go a long way. I would love new COMPONENTS to the structure, even if every component won't necessarily be updated. I just want the fortress to be fresh and interesting again.

Minescrafter02 has a good idea about the layout of the nether fortress but there is a problem. Structurally it looks good, but the main problem is most of the structure still used the brown nether brick. While the original fortress used the same color nether brick, we as community should add a bit more color to the build. We could keep the railings brown nether brick but allow the walkway below it to be a different color.

    Something like this for example.

When you look at these stairs you tell straight right away there is a bit more color added to the original build. Sure its tiny but I kind of wanted to keep some of the original nether brown bricks for the sides while making the pathway up a bit different. This gives off a bit of a creepy vibe to it as you are about to enter the warped forest version of the fortress. Another example would be inside the room itself.

Its a bit dark inside but you can easily tell there is a bit of difference in the layout of this area. The blue glass might not work as well but you can get a sense of the difference. Its a bit of an improvement over single brown nether brick. A good nether fortress shouldn't be all blue, or all red, or all brown but using a variety of different colors that complements the region itself.

The big question is what should the new nether fortress look like?

I have to admit, these pictures are beautiful. I would love some more colors to the nether fortresses.

I had a post rejected for I assume to be its similarity to yours, so I will instead comment here:

Nether fortresses in the Soul Sand Valley should be made of black nether brick / basalt bricks as it fits the aesthetic of the biome better and adds a block that a lot of players have been wanting.

Material should be based off of the biome the nether fortress began to generate in to prevent jarring changes, so if a fortress spawns in the nether wastes and extends into a soul sand valley, it will continue to be made of normal nether bricks.

Black nether bricks could also be crafted using nether bricks and basalt or soul sand. I would personally advise against black dye as it puts forward the idea of all 16 nether brick colours, which is not the aim of this suggestion.

    Hello everyone!

I would like to share my idea about updating The Nether Fortress.

I think that right now is a perfect time for changing The Fortress because of The Nether Update. My idea is about changing the base structure of the dungeon (or to have various structural designs) and to have some kind of a goal for your need to be there (like: to get an item/s in order to craft something, achieve an achievement and so on). To be introduced a new mob/s like Nether Guards (It just got in my head about the name, haha) and to be obtained something from them (netherite ore, potions, piece of armor) and also maybe to add new blocks which are obtainable only from this dungeon. For my last thing for the list of new things: to have some kind of an underground (or a cool platform on the top the Nether Fortress) room where you have to fight a boss (Fire Dragon; Soul Dragon; Nether King; Abomination Of The Dead) and of course - new drops from him/her.

Thank you for reading the comments and please share, add or change something which I wrote. More people to think for a specific idea , thus more minds are focused for a great thing !

More people should vote for this. Current nether fortresses are a complete disaster design-wise. They haven't been update for 10 years people. 10 years. This is ridiculous. They are almost as bad as jungle temples design-wise.

I think Minecraft should add armored skeletons and cages made of netherite. I also think smoke, dragons, trolls, orcs, and other monsters should be added to the nether to give it a more hellish feel. Remember mojang, the nether is a hellish dimension, and not a mushroom and pig creature dimension with monsters with floating and walking heads. Also, soulsand valleys should have giant monsters. Fossils don't come from thin air. Also, grim reapers should be boss mobs that can transport souls to the nether. More temples should be made, and ghosts should replace ghasts. This is mainly since ghasts are floating heads with weird tentacle thingies popping out of the bottom. Whoever came up with that has a strange view of what the nether would've been like. I hope they can turn the nether around and make a nether update 2.0 just like what they did with the aquatic update.

A room with bookshelves (kinda like in a stronghold) and some cobbwebs

Agreed. Nether fortresses are broken and glitchy, and should be better designed. They are currently just absurdly long hallways with blaze spawners and chests laying around. There are also glitches that keep wither skeletons from going after you (like the nether wart staircase room). The Nether fortress structure should be redone. Maybe fortresses could have more rooms as well, with fire related traps and such (that don't hurt the mobs inside, but do hurt you).

I already posted my suggestion under a few videos, people liked it i think (i got usually around 200-600 likes) and would love to hear what You think about it: how about making nether fortresses with "stages"? The closer to the center, the harder it gets. Something like:
"outskirts" stage would be poor and bland, just like the fortresses that we have right now.
The "near center" area would have some buildings and rooms, but with new mobs and better loot in the chests. Maybe it could look like someone actually lived here, just like in the Chocolate Quest mod castles (there's paintings, bookshelves, beds and things that would be in a normal Minecraft house).
And in the center of the fortress would be the sole, large castle (it would look the best in biomes like soulsand valley, because it would be an impressive sight if in open space, something like a massive castle with many side towers attached to it in a chaotic way) with different rooms and maybe a boss on the top. And maybe low chances of getting netherite scraps from chests. In my opinion Minecraft needs more endgame structures to make exploring the world more intresting and worth it. I hope You liked the idea :)

I agree! I think maybe it should be bigger too, but I might be alone on that. Still, I've heard that they don't want to change the Fortress at all in the 1.16 Update

The New Nether Fortresses should use the new Cracked Netherack Bricks and the Chiseled Netherack Bricks.
