Originally posted a while ago on reddit, here is my idea for a new block - lightning glass aka fulgurites. Created during a new weather type - dry thunderstorms - essentially the thunderstorm but without the rain, and would be biome specific to deserts and mesas. When lightning hits the sand, it would have a rare chance to convert it into the lightning glass block. This is a semi-translucent block, like shattered glass (Bad example pic: https://imgur.com/a/IMymRWw). The glass would be able to be mined via silk touch to get the block, otherwise turning into glass-shards. Lightning glass, of not mined, may convert back into sand so not to make deserts/mesas look ugly
As for the use of the block other than decoration, consider it as a very brittle glass. When an anvil is dropped onto lightning glass, it will break into shards. When one block is broken it could possibly have a chain-effect, breaking other lightning glass blocks in a certain radius (unless using silk touch). As for the shards, they could possibly be created into more decoration blocks like prismarine or other uses.
Here's the reddit post where I've taken mine and a couple other ideas from: https://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/comments/8h1ea0/dry_thunderstorms_and_lightning_glass/
