WARNING: Hecking long.
So I was thinking about a new tamable mob that could have a unique function, and settled on the Badger, European mind you. I've got a good idea of how I think it would work but welcome suggestions.
Spawning:
Badgers would spawn in most forests, excluding dark oak, and would spawn either as a lone mob or in groups of 2 to 4 around a small naturally generated structure, their Set, which would literally only be a small burrow in the ground with a one block entrance into a small chamber and simply serve as a home base for them to patrol around.
Behaviour:
Badgers would wander aimlessly alone, or as a group keep within ten blocks of the Set. The Badger is passive however uses a similar mechanism to the stray cat, in that they will slowly approach the player as long as they don't make any sudden movements, however unlike the cat, and if the player (or any other mob) makes a sudden move they become aggressive. This is to simulate their naturally bad eyesight and semi aggressive nature.
If you're lucky enough to have one approach you without startling it, you can tame it with raw meat and spider eyes (Badgers are sometimes incectovores) and of course mushrooms, although on second thoughts, that could be the food used to breed them?
Once tamed, badgers have three interactions, like wolves parrots ect., there's the right click to sit and to follow;
However you can only have one Badger follower at any one time, standing another Badger will instantly sit your current Badger back down. When following they will orbit the player within a 20 block diameter circle, with randomised pathfinding across the circle, avoiding two or more block drops and water, sniffing the ground and collecting any dropped items they pass over, storing them in a small internal inventory the player can access by shift right clicking. Additionally they will 'scurry' towards and attack any hostile mob (except creepers) within this 20 block player area provided there is a line of sight.
Now comes the unique behaviour, shift right clicking the ground when a Badger is following a player will make that block the centre of the Badgers new territory, which becomes thirty blocks, the Badger will meander on random paths in this area, again avoiding two or more block drops and water, picking up dropped items and attacking hostile mobs on sight. This is cancelled by sitting then standing them.
Stats:
Badgers in real life are pretty tough, like a less bad ass Honey Badger or Wolverine, so for health I'm suggesting 12.5 hearts (I think that's 25 health points?) making them more resistant than wolves, however damage on normal is 1 heart per attack, though they have a quick cool down for attacks and so can attack more frequently.
Their travelling speed is the same as the players walking speed, however when 'scurrying' towards a threat this animation is sped up and the Badger will beeline as close to a straight line as it can at player sprinting speed to the Mob.
TLDR? Badgers, once tamed will in effect be a player centred Minecart with hopper that attacks any hostile mob close enough, or can be left to defend your base or village, with higher health than the wolf (your traditional combat pet) but lower attack. If we can have weapon variations like swords fast and weak/axes slow and strong/trident strong but no shield, to suit different styles, why not have the same with companion mobs? There have been some pretty cool suggestions for new tamable mobs on here and I just wanted to throw my two cents in on it in the hope of adding more variety to the pool of Minecraft animals.
