A New Style Of Combat
Now I know before everyone downvotes or comments something...that a combat change/update has been suggested MANY MANY MANY times. However I have a slight spin on it that I believe would be good, now on with the show.(Please read the entire thing before commenting, if you need me to elaborate in the comments I will)
Weapon Types:
Here would be two main types of weapon types, heavy and light. Heavy weapons would degrade quicker(will bring up the degrade system shortly) and Light weapons will degrade...slower. Now this would change combat by making strategies in a way instead of just "sword is best weapon." A weapon would also be classified by what it's made out of, example being wood, stone and gold tools would be considered Light weapons while Iron and Diamond would be Heavy weapons.
Weapon Tier-ing:
"OMG EDUPES AREN'T WEAPON TIERS AND WEAPON TYPES THE SAME?" No they aren't timmy...Weapons tiers would be based off Damage, Material and Durability. An example is a Diamond Hammer(will mention later), it would be a 5/5 tier weapon if it has full durability, it'd be made out of diamond, and would deal hefty damage. I would love to list every single tier and all the weapons but that'd be a hassle and clog this suggestion up. (Note: Enchanting a weapon will make a weapon go over the normal 5 tiers into 10 tiers, this would be shown by having a status bar with one piece of the bar will be glowing, of course there'd be more glowing bars the higher enchantment level it is.)
Weapon Degrading System:
Now my Weapon Degrading system would be similar to Axoladdy's Decay system however I will still explain it. Weapons would "degrade" over time the more you click, so if you click really fast then your weapon will do less damage each hit. I thought however to elaborate on his suggestion that weapons should fractionally decrease in power quicker if the durability is really low. This would add in faster clicking in a way and making combat way more...strategic in a way. Light weapons will degrade slower as already mentioned and Heavy weapons quicker.
The Weapons:
TO THE JUICY STUFF! There would be 3 new weapons added, two of which always being light weapons aka the Dagger and Short Sword. Short Swords would do closer damage to a sword while still being light, blocking with a short sword will also be a thing however Hammers can bypass a Sword Block. Daggers cannot block and do the least amount of dagger for a normal weapon however give you more agility with you being able to sidestep attacks.
The third weapon is clearly a Hammer, a Hammer would be a Heavy weapon except for it's wood variant. The hammer wouldn't have a slam ground attack but a high knockback when it's cooled down and a Sword-break counter would balance it with other weapons.
