I've been playing a lot of Terraria recently, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who notices the similarities between the content they've added and the stuff in this game. That's not to say it's a bad thing, because I quite love it. But for example, the Goblin Army vs. the current pillaging mechanic.
One thing Terraria has that Minecraft lacks is a diverse underground experience. For example, Terraria adds an underground version of several of their surface biomes, such as the Underground Jungle. This could easily be done with one of the rare biomes in Minecraft, such as the mushroom island. This is what I'll be suggesting here: a far more challenging place to go caving and gather new loot. This is the Mycosphere.
I. Terrain
The Mycosphere will spawn directly underneath any given Mushroom Island. The mushroom biome will still be a safe haven though. That is, no mobs will spawn… Until Y level 30. This is where the Mycosphere starts. Above that, there are regular caves without mobs. These caves often have giant gaping holes into the Mycosphere. One misstep and you fall in.
The Mycosphere extends from y level 30 to bedrock. The caves are ravine like but a bit wider. The floors are straight up bedrock formations. The ravine walls are made up of stone and Hardened Mycelium, a block requiring a Diamond Shovel to mine and takes almost as long as obsidian. They have a much higher chance to spawn ores, but you won't find any while strip mining; all ores are exposed. Purple colored Glowing Mushrooms are common on exposed ravine tiles, as well as a few other things we'll get to. No dirt, gravel, lava, granite, diorite or andesite appear in this biome.
There are also several floating islands that float above the bedrock. These have mushroom houses. Each house has a bed, a furnace, and a series of bookshelves. The bookshelves have a chance to be arranged in such a way that they contain a chest within them. These chests always contain one enchanted book unique to the Mycosphere (unless a mending book appears) and a few other enchanted books of low level.
II. Enemies
There are two enemies in the Mycosphere. They are the following:
- Ladybug: Stays on the ground in groups of 3-7 until the player comes near. Then swarms them like phantoms. Drops Carapace.
- Wasp: A larger, slower enemy. Hovers around the Mycosphere very slowly. Fires slow stingers. Drops Stingers.
III. Loot
First off. There's a rare type of mushroom called the Lightning Mushroom. It's electric blue. These can be eaten and will increase your movement speed by 0.5 permanently when eaten. This happens up to a maximum of 16%, meaning a half stack of them will do the trick.
Next are the chest loot books. Each of these have a 25% chance to spawn in a bookshelf chest, with the other 25% being occupied by Mending. They are:
- Spore Guard: Armor enchant. Protection of the armor increases but 175% when your at half or below health.
- Spore Wind: Tool enchant. Randomly (5%) gives you a haste II effect for 5 seconds after mining a block.
- Spore Cloud: Bow enchant. While charging your bow, defensive spores will surround you and damage enemies who try to get close.
Finally, we have the Sting Shuriken and the Carapace Shoes. Both are made with drops from enemies. The Sting Shuriken is crafted with 4 Stingers in a diamond shape, making 16. These are thrown like snowballs but actually do damage.
The Carapace Shoes allow you to hover in the air for a few seconds by holding the jump button without Elytra gliding, but only at the height that you were at when you jumped. They are made with 4 Carapace in traditional boot fashion. While they take no damage from hover attacks, their durability and protection is the same as a leather helmet.
So, whaddya think? Any improvements I could make?
