Rabbits are currently not well equipped to survive in the world around them. They are surrounded by dangers that they don't know how to combat. They see a cactus and think, "What would happen if I jump into this?" They see a hill and think, "What would happen if I jump off of this?" They see a wolf and think, "What if I were to jump away from this, but not fast enough to avoid the one hit it takes to die."
Now the obvious way to fix this issue would be to make rabbits run faster from wolves and smart enough to not jump into danger, but that would take away from the charming character of the mob. Instead, I propose that we keep the mob nice and stupid, and let it do what rabbits are known for doing in real life: breed like crazy. (It should be noted that the ideas at the beginning of this paragraph are completely reasonable fixes. Developers should not be afraid to implement them for the dumb reason that I, mostly jokingly, talked them down.)
Now to address concerns. I do understand that breeding too quickly is unsustainable from a computing standpoint, but that can be avoided. Similarly to how new mobs can't spawn after a mob cap, rabbits should stop naturally breeding after there are about ten of them in the area. Also, if I wanted to keep exactly 2-9 rabbits in a cage that would be problematic. One fix for this would that once bred once by a human they would be some form of 'tamed' and would never choose to breed on their own again. This second concern is not too big of a deal though, because it could just be a quirk of the rabbits. At the moment no other concerns come to mind, but if anyone in the community has any I would love to hear them.
