Crossbows definitely need a change. Right now, regular bows are so much better. While I think Piercing increasing damage like power does for a regular bow would be nice, it would also be nice if the power enchantment was just compatible with the crossbow.

i agree with ninjazombeyoshi. Crossbow damage should improve with Power

i disagree that quick charge should be nerfed though. the crossbow is already painfully slow as is and quick charge 3 makes them usable. if the trade off for draw speed is accuracy then the crossbow needs to be absolutely dead-on because the draw speed is just anti-fun at this point

infinity should also work on crossbows. they already have enough disadvantages, they dont need anymore

edit: also clicking reload ONCE should begin the reload animation. you shouldn't have to hold it down until it's ready

Clearly you got into a fight before charging your crossbow instead of after. However I agree that the crossbow needs more enchantments.

I agree with what is written above, crossbows are basically useless. But in my opinion they are still fun. Shooting fireworks is insanely satisfying and you can still charge it beforehand to quick draw and shoot and then combo with your melee  weapon of choice. Also, I don't think peircing is useless because it is pretty much a lesser version of infinity. In fact you can pick the arrow back up if it didn't hit its peirce limit. But that is still an issue if you use it as a sniper of sorts.

However late I may be to this post, I have done loads of testing and found crossbows super useful, not perfect, but very useful.

Why? Well for starters Both piercing and Multishot allow you to hit multiple mobs without using up an arrow, though if you want easy recovery the crossbow becomes a better closer range weapon. The hit-box on piercing arrows is super lenient, so you don’t need the mobs to be perfectly in a row, in-fact piercing is so good that Multishot is actually nearly useless in comparison. As well, with how the crossbow functions, with a little learning and the quick charge enchantment, it’s actually a vast amount faster than fully charging a bow, even if the single target damage is lower.

Why the speed is key: Quick charge brings the loading time to less than that of the bow, however they difference is that you don’t fire upon release. you actually can load by holding to fire, and once the shot is fired you immediately start reloading, bringing down the reaction time you get from firing consecutive shots with a bow. As well, with a loaded crossbow you always get the fire shot, so by the time a player can aim and fully charge a bow you can have 2 shots fired already, and start loading the third.

They're pretty useful already. You can make multiple, and then just charge all of them. Going into bossfights you can actually just fill up your hotbar with them, and unleash a quick volley for massive dps. This makes certain fights far easier. For just regular mob killing the bow is far better. Mainly because you can one tap just about any basic mob with a single arrow and power V. Unfortunately the amount of situations where you need to kill multiple mobs is quite limited.

I think multishot could be improved. Multiple stages allowing for more arrows. (less damage per individual arrow as a tradeof, and more reload time to make it hard to refresh) And for there to be a shotgun factor where you deal more damage if all shots hit the same target. It certainly allows you to specialise in close quarters combat without damaging sword or others. (At least not any more than how a bow often outshines a enchanted diamond sword up close with enough power...)

I agree. I also think that the trident should be changed, as it is practically useless right now.

I dont really care about the other things,(no offense) but I do wish fireworks could become a useful weapon

I disagree with most of these.

Theres a big problem if an enchantment increases damage for crossbows, you can just load 9 crossbows in your hotbar and kill any players with enchanted diamond armors and golden apple.

Crossbows are useful enough for me, being able to charge first then run at full speed and shoot. I use it like a cover-up-shooter game against skeletons, hide while charging, shoot, repeat.

Crossbows are good how they are. Crossbows are NOT useful as a long range weapon though, they are useful close-range. If you're being swarmed by zombies, enchanted crossbows are way better than fully enchanted bows! Also you can charge them before you use them. In PvP I often have a crossbow next to my sword so that I can get good combos by using my sword and then my crossbow.

I agree with all points of this post

I agree about these points. I made my own Mod for crossbows before crossbows existed in game. I made 4 different ones each varying in strength and reload.

The wooden one is a quick reload and 2 hits most mobs. But the later x bows one shot mobs but have longer reloads. During loading you are afflicted by slowness III with exception of wooden one since you need to take multiple shots (wooden bow is only slowness II but its only for 3.5 sec). So you can't just run and gun with the late game bows. The highest damage bow requires you reload it for 8 seconds. Also arrow drop is there but its not that much on that late one until you are trying to shoot beyond render distance. Wooden one has its uses but it will burn arrows faster and has the worst arrow speed. I plan to make the iron bow hold two shots but takes a really long time to reload it.

I haven't tried the newest version of Minecraft's actual crossbows because my mod is incompatible and from this the new ones sound lame. I just can't make fancy stuff like arrow piercing or spread shots.

Arguably I may have broken the game allowing for bows to one shot mobs so maybe the late game bows are too good and should reload longer. But I haven't uploaded it to the public so i'm only 'hurting' my own game play.

Been a while since my first comment. Thought I could add a few more thoughts.

For nerfing quick-charge, well, a minor nerf would be alright, but I wouldn't dramatically nerf it either.

Considering the crossbow is made using two pieces of iron (one for tripwire hook, one in the recipe) and only one less string than a regular bow, I would expect the crossbow to always be able to keep up with regular bows.

Concerning the scenario Hilmy091 typed, there's a bit of a decent point there, but at the same time you still need 9 power-enchanted crossbows for that scenario. Mojang can also make power and quick-charge mutually exclusive as well. That, and I'm pretty sure shields are still a thing. Considering the combat tests seem to point towards removing or at least shortening that annoying shield delay, putting up a shield when your opponent fires from far away seems like a pretty simple counter, and if they are close, well, that's when the melee weapons should come slashing away. If they stop firing, chances are they need to reload, and that takes time for nine different weapons.

Also, who plays with 9 crossbows on all 9 active inventory slots? I would at least have a sword as an emergency weapon and golden apples or whatever food I have as substitute for healing.

I'm all for either Piercing increasing arrow damage or just straight up power and flaming being compatible with the Crossbow.
It just doesnt feel like the sniper weapon it should be.

The idea of multiple levels for Multishot is good too. It's already balanced by the increased loss of durability and extra arrow use.

It would be nice if Infinity was a possibility. Incompatible with Multishot or mending

Maybe sould the crossbow be a more sniper version of the bow?

The only thought I have on this is if the bow can have infinite arrows with the infinity enchantment then why can't the crossbow have the same enchantment?

definitly true, more for adventure maps than survival. I need to be able to set an op enchant on it!

Crossbows should also be much more accurate! The way current bows are, from a reasonably far distance you get a lot of variance in your shots. A crossbow doesn't need this; you're not straining to hold the string back!

Combined with crossbow bolts following a shallower arc and travelling faster, the crossbow could be an effective weapon at ranges so long even bows are hardly useful. Imagine the pvp potential!

I wish they made crossbows faster to shoot on Mobile, having to press and hold makes them soo much slower than they already are, I love crossbows but there needs to be a way to shoot them faster there, I was thinking they should have a button that says shoot (like the one the fishing rod has) and it shoots instantly when you tap it.

I somehow thought crossbows had more durability than bows, huh.  Well even though they need tweaking, I'd like to keep the medium range group damage niche the crossbow has. I hope more combat snapshot changes come soon because not only no shield delay but also another interesting one was the multishot crossbow's 3 arrows being able to damage a single mob all at once kinda like a shotgun.  Normally the other two just bounce off harmlessly.  That might help with the disparity in damage somewhat.  Although I get what you're saying with the crossbow as a sniper weapon, not only does it have a slightly higher max damage than an unenchanted bow, but it also has a longer arc than a bow, which does seem odd to me.  At least it makes piercing easier to use.

You are saying the crossbow is weak only because you are comparing it to a Power 4 and Flame bow. That is a huge difference. If you get Piercing 3 on a crossbow it will one-shot the common mobs.

Dude, the crossbow is completely broken and overpowered on bedrock edition. With harming 2 arrows, which are extremely easy to get, you can one shot someone with prot 4 netherite and with a totem. The totem does nothing, they still die in one shot.

yeah i agree crossbows are pretty useless and the only reason they where added to the game was for the pillagers

yeah crossbows need buffs and general changes, but to say theyre objectively worse than the bow is just plain wrong. firework rockets with crossbows are quite powerful as a mid/long range option, and also theyre good with slowfall arrows in crystal pvp. fully enchanted, crossbows charge to max power faster than bows and multishot makes it harder to miss. their use in axe & shield pvp is nice, it can knock back your opponent and throw off their spacing, allowing for free damage. yes i know bows can do that as well, but crossbows are harder to see coming, and even if you do they'll likely be enchanted with piercing for going through shields, so ur prolly getting hit anyways

so far ive only talked about pvp to prove crossbows arent useless, but i agree that crossbows are too weak in pve. changes that might maybe work would be to allow them to accept power, but make power and quick charge mutually exclusive. also, decrease fire rate and increase damage of crossbows. this would put bows and crossbows in different niches: multiple crossbows for extra dps at the cost of inventory space (good for working in mob populated areas); and a single bow and arrows, better for general everyday use. not sure if these changes would actually work tho cuz i dunno how to make the changes myself for testing
