This is for future combat, but definitely support old combat switch option. This combat system is meant to be a little more in depth, but almost combine pre/post 1.9 combat. Also, some of my ideas are inspired from Tanner Pearson's post "Minecraft Combat, My Take".
First off, I think 1.9 wasn't as successful as it could have been because it didn't feel like combat. The telegraph was inverted. What I am saying is there should be a telegraph to attacks. Instant hitting I feel made shields useful only for arrows.
Minecraft is a pretty simple game to understand so in my opinion we should keep it simple. I believe it should have rock-paper-scissors combat. Here is what I mean:
-Block beats Light Attack.
-Block loses to Heavy Attack.
-Light attack beats Block.
-Light attack loses to Heavy attack (Hyper armor - Uninterruptable)
-Dodge(Maybe roll) beats heavy attack.
-Dodge loses to light attack.
How light attack, heavy attack, and block would work:
Light attack: 1.1 Seconds to land first hit. The second hit will be .9 seconds. Then the last hits will be as fast as pre-1.9 unless interrupted by a block or any damage taken.
Heavy attack: 1.6 seconds to land. Hold left click to use. Can't be interrupted by damage, the user takes only 80% normal damage. Cooldown 4 seconds to prevent spamming.
Dodge: 1 second animation .9 second invulnerability. Bound to V key by default, backwards roll/dodge by default. Holding S or A does a side roll/dodge. Dodge is meant to defend against the heavy attack but does not interrupt light attacks. Cooldown 3 seconds to prevent spamming.
*This really could simply be a dodging animation and your character is given a high speed modifier for less than a half a second.
