An enchantment that extends the reach of your tools

We all have experienced those pesky trees in survival that require us to build upwards as we break them. This enchantment can help you avoid that altogether (aside from giant jungle trees). It could be called something like “Long Arm” and it has three levels. The highest level would allow you to break the largest spruce trees with no building (or maybe a little less if you think that’s too OP). It would be a big time saver and could even be useful in some mining situations where you have a coal vein or something above you in a cave that is too high to usually mine. I don’t think it should be applicable to combat, but with block breaking, it would be extremely helpful.

The enchant should be available for axes, shovels and pickaxes.

    This would be a neat enchantment, as long as it isn't overpowered.  According to the wiki, the current range is 4.5 to 6 blocks depending on the version and input methods.   It might be reasonable if each level increased the range by 2 blocks.  So level 3 would double or more than double your breaking range.

    ClayGoddessSari: you’re right, it shouldn’t be OP but it should be enough to be a helpful and reliable enchantment. Double the distance does sound good to me.

    Quinten van Bruggen: that’s my thought process with this as well. This is a great addition for mining/log breaking, but it should have absolutely no impact on melee performance & range. This is strictly for block breaking.

    Mobius 762: I originally proposed that you could break the largest spruce trees without building, though I understand that may be a little too OP. But, what you’re suggesting really doesn’t give much of an advantage, and I don’t think people would really ever go for the enchantment at that point. When I thought of this, I figured it should be at least 3 levels and 1 block per level, though I would be happy with Mojang adopting this idea in any state (and how the see fit). Thanks for supporting my idea though, as well as every person who has voted and commented thus far and anyone who will be voting and commenting in the future. I was not expecting the enthusiasm I have gotten from the Minecraft community on Reddit and on here.

    I agree that you should not be able to enchant swords with it, even though that would be cool, because in PvP, you could hold the other player so far away, that he couldn't even hit you once! 

    But: The enchantment should have an effect on the reach of every tool, including swords! That way, you can get yourself awesome swords with e. g. the /give command. That could also be used for fun minigames!

    personally, i think this would work on any tool, including the likes of shears and swords. however the damage aspect removed in the extended range. as swords can be used as tools (leaf blocks and cobwebs) and axes can also be used offensivly, to disregard one in favour of the other would create an imbalance, and everyone would use axes for the extended damage range, even if it's less damage.

    I think this reach enchantment should have 5 levels:
    •1, letting you mine 3 blocks more
    •2, letting you mine 5 blocks more
    •3, letting you mine 7 blocks more
    This would be very OP although it would be very hard to find, like a 3% chance in a Jungle Temple or something.

    I was gonna post this exact idea, down to the "shouldn't be applicable for combat" part! I think the enchantment should simply be called "Reaching."
