Sneaking should make you 1 block tall.

Sneaking in Minecraft has 2 main purposes: preventing the player from falling down, and hiding the name plate. Since pressing f1 can also hide name tags and some servers pervent nametags from disappearing altogether, the second feature can be viewed as pointless.

Sneaking is not that useful IMO, but just by making the player 1 block high while sneaking, it will be much more useful. It may be one of the more smaller changes that will revolutionize the game, just like fireworks+elytra. Here are 3 aspects of the game that this change will benefit.

The Sneaking Aspect

Shrinking the player from 1.8 meters to 1.6 meters is hardly a difference, but a 1 block high sneaking animation will allow players to hide behind 1 block tall bushes, cobble walls, or any other hiding spots that were never available before.

The Mining/Navigation Aspect

Isn't it wierd that you can only go through 1 block high gaps via swimming or glitching in with an elytra? Let us go through 1 high gaps without any glitches by just sneaking in. The speed reduction caused by sneaking will even out the advantages.

Strip mining using a 1:1 hole is more durability efficient than a 1:2, which will benefit players in early game.

The Combat Aspect

The 1.9 combat have been criticized for eventually being a hit trade game. They say that with the same armor and weapon condition, the one who hits first will have an advantage because of it. Because of this extra 1 hit, the opponent will die.

But with sneaking being 1 block high, combat will be more complex and enjoyable. you can now dodge attacks and hit the opponent more.

While sneaking avoids attacks from above, jumping will avoid attacks from below. Since attacking the opponent while sneaking will make you aim at the feet, the opponent can jump up to dodge, and then crit you back.

In terms of PVE, skeleton arrows and drowned tridents may be easier to avoid. Since they aim at the player's head for better range, dodging the aprojectiles by sneaking will be prety useful. It may be even possible to dodge spider attacks and make them jump over you.

    This makes a lot of sense to add to the game mechanically, but the idea might be better serviced with a dedicated crouch along with its own animation. A dedicated crouch may seem impossible for the simple reason that it would be a challenge to add to the console controllers' button layouts, but sprinting while sneaking could be a very natural feeling way of implementing a crouch.

    1.4 looks better, since the player doesn't have knees.

    I've always been kind of disappointed at how few people liked the 1.9 combat mechanics. Maybe this could bring more people to accept it?

    Moving toward a 1-block high space while sneaking should put you into a crawling animation.

    No, lying down is a separate function that must be implemented on a separate key, or Shift+Ctrl.
