Minecraft has a lot of blocks, but what if they had more? Why do we need them? Please don't just add lists of things - these will be marked as spam and removed! Also, no furniture, guns, or vertical/"sideways"/"upright"/"standing" slabs (yes, we see you).

Cactus, based on the Prickly Pear

This is a prickly pear cactus: (link)  The desert is in desperate need of more interest, and a new cactus is the best kind of new plant to add.

It grows in a very segmented fashion, and so would be an interesting one to adapt to Minecraft's style.  It also grows fruit (the reddish parts in the picture), so would make for an interesting new desert food source.  The cactus itself is also edible, once you take off the spines. (link)  Maybe if you use a sword to harvest a prickly pear cactus you get a de-spined version that you can eat, but can't be planted to grow into a new plant.

I imagine it could grow similar to the chorus plant, with branching segments that all have a similar appearance, with the final piece growing one or more fruits. Each piece of the prickly pear can be planted in sand and grow a new plant.

    Along with this, you could implement saguaros. 

    Here's a minor point- I live in Colorado, which is technically a "High Plains desert"- which means it's dry but not that dry. It's not your typical sand desert- there's a lot of scrub and grass. Anyway, my point is, there's prickly pears all over Colorado- even in the mountains. So, if smaller ones grew in various other biomes (Plains, or a dry plains variant, extreme hills (?)), it would be fairly realistic.

    A saguaro would be a pretty easy modification of the existing cactus, and both prickly pears and saguaros could be grown off the chorus tree model like you said.

    Anyway, to sum up: There's at least one other kind of cactus that could be added, and prickly pears don't have to be limited to deserts.

    Here's another idea for a desert plant- Juniper trees/bushes. I believe they're technically a tree, but they're very short (And very dark green). I was in Moab, Utah last year, and they were all over the place. It was a nice splash of green against the red sandstone, and I think they would be a good addition to the badlands desert type.

    Yeah So Cactus Should have Some Red textures kinda like berries. And People will also plant cactus for them. And thev should add branches to cactus

    It would also be cool if they could be planted in flower pots, but the color is randomized using the same algorithm as picture frames.

    You could remove the spikes with a sword, or maybe a hoe on a placed block, like how axes strip wood

    The cactus could flower after a rain that would be rare in the desert. You could use the spines to make a thorns type potion. I like the idea of using it as a food source. A new unique food would would be a fun addtion to the oversaturated food menu. You could use the flowers for a special dye or flower chain.

    I really Love the idea in making the desert a bit more exiting, but not to exiting. Just making the desert more live able. I love Cacti and especially the different succulents that can live in the desert. It would be pretty to see the cactus have blooming flowers. I know it was supposed to be a vote in 2019, but maybe you can make the next update a Bloomfull update that draws some beauties of the earth. maybe flowers on lily pads and flowers on cacti. Yeah, i know, i know, we already have a variety of flowers and Most of the updates are already based on the Earth. But I personally think the Desert could use a touch up. Theirs more to a desert than sand, temples, caves, dead bushes, and plain cacti. Don't You? - Ore

    Id like to propose a change to regular cacti as well: make it so it can have branches by placing a cactus block on the side of a planted cactus. Bonus if the arms are slightly thinner than the trunk, like chorus branch thick. Itll look better that way.

    I would like to see the Prickly Pear fruit be able to be thrown, which gives a 1/2 Heart of damage. You should be able to collect them by hand and eat them raw (at the cost of damage, with a saturation level of either Apples or Berries). This is the "Raw" version, with spines. Raw Prickly Pears would stack to 16 and when thrown explodes in a burst of magenta, similar to a Snowball. Crafting them in a Crafting Table will process them into safely edible fruit that stacks normally, with a sliced or prepared texture (to differentiate between the two). This will give you a similar saturation to Apples. Further processing in the Crafting Table will turn them into Magenta Dye. The body of the cacti, the individual segments, can be broken with Shears. You can plant them to grow new cacti, which grows randomly, like a Chorus Plant. Alternatively, you can put them in the Smoker, or on a Campfire, to grill them. This will give you Nopales, which would give you a saturation similar to Baked Potatoes. If rice is ever added to the game, you could combine Wheat, Nopales, a Meat and Rice to make a Burrito, which I think everyone can agree would probably be the most popular food in the game.

    I quite like the prickly pear as a hurt fruit, they're better than ananas when it comes to their aesthetic. (Ananas are pineapples)

    Add a Barrel Cactus, grows 1 block, to 2 x 2, to 3 x 3. Break a 3 x 3 cactus with a bucket you get a bucket of water.

    I think prickly pear cactus would be a very excellent idea! The way prickly pear cactus could grow is like how the caves and cliffs spikes grow. They could be placed like the way turtle eggs are placed and grow in height which would be a very cool cactus plant. You could even harvest the plant to get cacti fruit!

    I have an idea; what if the vulture (from the Badlands biome vote) could use the prickly pears as a path finding tool? Maybe the vulture could land there, and could be attracted by the fruits growing on it. Therefore, you could make it so if a redstone system could theoretically plant and remove the fruits in a line, causing the vulture to follow the pets to a location.
