Probably the best way to add candles would be to also add bees.  Then you could have bee hives that give you beeswax and honey.  The wax is used to craft candles using string.

Another thing you could use to make candles is tallow, which is made from animal fat.  Maybe cows drop fat as well as meat and leather, and you get tallow from smelting that fat.  The candles would then be crafted from tallow and string.  Or you could add the fat to pig drops to give an extra reason to farm them, although tallow is traditionally made from cows or sheep.

Yes that's really good! Also it could have slightly less light level, a pleasant light for homes!

Great idea. we also use candles for birthday wishes. That would be good if we can put candles on cakes for birthday parties.

I really love this idea and I honestly wish people would give more attention to it. Sea pickles are probably my favourite addition in 1.13 and a land version of this light source would be excellent.

ClayGoddessSari had really good ideas with beeswax and tallow to craft candles with, but i think another great way to implement wax could be with the addition of Carnauba palm trees. Their leaves could be harvested with shears to then craft wax using them. The devs did say they were planning to add palm trees eventually anyway so it would give an additional use to them, even if they aren't Carnauba palm trees specifically.

Woodland Mansions and/or trading are, however, good options to obtain candles as well.

I think the highlight of this post though is the scented candles and their monster repellent abilities. Their range could be slightly greater than their light level, like a range of 6 blocks for one candle, 10 for two, 14 for three, and a maximum of 18 for four, preventing any type of monster from spawning within their radius. Scented candles could be crafted with the usual candle components (string + wax) or the candle itself, along with the addition of any kind of flower.

I've also been thinking about variants of scented candles that could attract certain types of mobs with much greater range, although I'm not sure how those could be crafted. Perhaps they could be exclusive to woodland mansions, giving an additional reason to seek them.

I really hope that candles get implemented at some point, I'd love to have a more ambient source of light that isn't a redstone torch or locked to a water source.

There should actually be candles in vanilla mostly because of how many mods adds candles. Quark, Pam Harvest, Garden Stuff, and many others adds some sort of candle in their mod. I would assume that there are tons of players who would want to see candles in vanilla Minecraft.

Regardless of how they are made, this is how baseline candles ought to function. A single candle should have an ambient light level of about 4, which is equivalent to moonlight, and allows monsters to spawn easily. When placed on walls, they sit in a fashion identical to torches and redstone torches. When placed on the ground, they can be grouped together in the same pattern as sea pickles do in water, with a corresponding number of jumps in luminescence from baseline 4 (think cathedrals with all those rows of candles that are lit by people coming to pray). Furthermore, candles could be used to create dim lanterns, which would once again illuminate at a light level of 4, and be useful for allowing monsters to more easily spawn in their dim full-moon equivalent light. I do like the idea of various coloured candles allowing certain monsters to more readily spawn within their light radius, as they could be spread out in dungeons as a sort of crude "wandering monster table".

I love the mob-repelling/mob-attracting idea, that would be so cool! They should definitely make this happen!

I'd like this if you'd be able to craft it from fat and string. Maybe even using dyes to make different candle colors. Add iron and maybe make a candle stand.

The candles should be crafted with raw pork meat and one stick or pigs can drop fat and we use them to make it

1 candle provides less light then 4 candles just like sea pickles

@Mc Rat there is actually a wax block texture in the recent snapshot's files so at this point candles are very likely

Fits perfectly with the new bees. It’s a great idea for lighting interiors , churches and castles in particular.

I like "seapickles concept" and I'd like to add two more things. Candles should fade when it's raining. You can light them again using flint and steel. Also comparator should be able to count the light level or number of candles.

saw that the bees were added on snapshot, be able to craft candles with wax and she would react like sea pickles but on earth

This should be a temporarily-like light source, it ends in about 3-5 minutes and can be altered by commands. To reignite the candles simply use flint & steal!

With the bees update, we should be able to craft candles with rope and wax from the hives

I've also thought about candles, particularly after bees were added. I would like it if individual candles could be placed in on fences to make chandeliers, though I also like the way the group of four would look. I would also like it if they flickered, though that would require more programming.

I like the Idea however, I think that candles should be crafted from beeswax and string. You will occasionally find beeswax dropping from a nearby bee hive similarly to how a chicken drops an egg. It would also be awesome if we could add dyes to the candles once they are crafted or soul sand to have a candle with a blue flame.

YES! This goes perfectly with the 1.15 update and gives a use for bees besides food. Such as using beeswax to make candles, a much needed addition. Beeswax should be moderately rare, but would provide an easy mass supply for lighting.

It could have a "candle suport" for hold it with the left hand and it will consume after 2 minecraft days and the candle suport will be crafted whit 3/4 iron ingots

If they add canles, they should also add a variant similar to Terraria's Water Candle, which increases mob spawn rate. It would be found in e.g. the Dungeon (like in Terraria), to make it more dangerous, and maybe other structures as well.

This item would be very helpful in mob farms.

We have bees, so maybe bees wax and string together would make a candle? You could probably dye it as well.

I think that the best way to implement it would be to add a new drop to pigs so that they have a use other than meat, this is because with 1.15, adding another thing to get from beehives/nests would be a bad idea, because that would bring it to three, which I think is too many things from one resource

    EDIT:

Also, beeswax is what honeycombs are made of in real life.

I was making a haunted mansion so I like this. The crafting recipe should be wax (something that makes it) and a torch and add dyes to change color.
