The makers and players of this game need to think of the long term when it comes to transporting our loot; heck transportation in general.
I know people who won't play Minecraft anymore until the updates stop. In other words, they will never play again. They're tired of having to give up their worlds because of new content not available in their old worlds.
With infinite worlds we can get new content in old worlds if we just go out far enough. However, this means leaving our old builds and farms behind; when some may still work.
Why not give us back the ability to link our old and new builds? Why do we have to travel so slow in infinite worlds? Why do we have to travel in the Nether to get anywhere in the overworld?

Have it lay down foundation and track in a player programed pattern. Give it a good speed; about 32 mph. Have it draw building materials from linked chest carts. Have it always loaded so a player can go do something else while they wait for the rail line to be built.
Another option is light rail. Have a block that will project two beams of light infinitely in one direction. These beams of light will serve as the rails for our carts. As long as nothing is in the way the rails will continue on forever.
If players had the tools to build rail lines automatically they would. I know I'd like to travel through the overworld instead of the Nether.
Something like this can allow players to keep their worlds while endless updates continue. Something like this can help players build better worlds. Isn't that what Minecraft was about?
