I was thinking about something similar recently: Accessories. Basically, even if you couldn't change or remove any parts already there (arms, legs, body) you could add new ones, like wings or taller hats, to really make your skin stand out. And if those accessories conflicts with armor or elytras, it would disappear when equipping the armor pieces. (Wings vanishing when elytra is equipped, hat vanishing when helmet is equipped, etc.) You would also be able to disable other people's accessories if they get in the way of PVP somehow.

I think skins just could be more 3D as in you built up from a small cube with actual 3D pixels you could make it as big or small as you want but you wouldn't be able to remove the small cube where you would build on, as this might be laggy there could be a option or gamerule to disable 3D skins

i think the main body model that we have now would be hard-coded, and the parts we model would be the additional cuboids

We certainly need this feature to be re added for players that wanted to have cool looking 3d skins with something like an angelic wing or floating swords and not just the plain and boring flat skin or the rather bizarre character creation on bedrock.

Also one thing; what if the model extension of somthing like a wing can be folded like how bugs and birds do to make sense of them when entering and exiting doors

I feel like it should require at least half of torso, and same with head. Limbs don't effect much, and being able to remove them increases creativity

I want two heads!!!! So i agree

how is adding custom models for your skin cheating? it's possible to have an entirely invisible skin already, just make it so that regardless how you change the model the actual hitbox is always the same so they can't just hide their hitbox underground or something.

I loved using the Custom 3D skins in XBox 360! I used the Half Steve, Half Minecraft-Skeleton skin for so long!

This is most certainly the #1 Feature I would want to see on Minecraft Java Edition & Bedrock Edition!!!!!!! It gives you so much more customization to your character that you would never run out of ideas...

I was thinking that maybe the server.properties file should have an option called something like custom-skin-models where if false it will if players use their custom skin models to force their model to Steve or Alex. A lot more easier to let servers disable it.

I suggest 3 settings for servers: Basic (The original skin format, with 6 cuboids and an extra layer for each cuboid; good for large / laggy servers), Complex (Basically your idea but perhaps with strict size limitations; good for PvP servers), and Freedom (Basically your idea but with minimal limitation; good for roleplay and creative servers). The default would probably be Basic. While we're on the topic, I would like to see in-game skin changing so you don't have to exit the game, change your skin, and log in all over again.

Perhaps a server can specify the limitations for skin creation so that you don't get people walking around twice as big as other players making it slightly chaotic.

I think that this is a great idea! I think that we should only be able to have the model up to 4 pixels away from the model at once, though. As well as that, we should make sure that the solid parts are all over the model and not scattered to try and trick people.

Ok, I just had this same idea but this explains it so much better...

I like this idea, but don't make it too complicated.  For bedrock, you could have a pannel for the left side, a pannel for the front, ect.  You then fill in with color and add wings, hats, glasses, and other acssesories at the end.  If there was something special to add, you use the current characture creator system, just don't change the body, but add or change the legs, arms, and the accsesories.

Or, maybe, and picture this, there should be a toggle that disables custom geometry that is not authorized by the server owner. That way, everything is fair.

You explained this very well and the limitations you sugested were really good, espacially the one were you limit overused transparency, i have another idea, when creating a realm or server, in the options, you can choose wether people can use custom skin, imported skin or classic skin, or all three, you get the idea, your suggestion is awsome.

You could simply allow Servers to disable these types of skins. That way open PvP ones can just set it and forget it if need be.

I mean... maybe just make the hitbox the same and only allow for 1/3 of pixels of a section to be transparent, but allow you to freely add things to the outside, but only 1/3 of the width of the body?

It does actually exist: Customizable player models is a mod for Java which enables you to create more than 6 cubes, to edit them or to remove them. You only can use your custom skin if the server allows it, and if the server allows people with and without, the ones without the mod see a normal skin.I don't really know if there's a cap because I've been using this mod for only 3 days. But I'm glad to say that it's indispensable in any Java Edition modpack. It's actually for both forge 1.8-1.17 and fabric 1.8-1.17 (maybe they update it to 1.18 in a few days).
