I think with the new caves and cliffs update this is a must-have, and it wouldnt be that complicated to implement. all that would need to happen is a shallow cut into the side of the mountain of various widths in order for the water to not continously hit blocks and expand outward. with just that and having it connect to rivers at the bottom and aquifers in mountain caves or lakes on top or anything like that I think it would look amazing. I think mechanically it would be really interesting to execute this by implementing an erosion value to water. when bodies of water are first generated(and not afterwards as to not ruin builds or anything like that), they could destroy blocks that they are flowing into, potentially more depending on the fall height or something like that. this could solve the waterfall thing by creating a divot in the mountain they are on in order to create a path for it to flow down

Wolves should spawn here, too. Maybe if bear variants or ducks or other mountain/river wildlife are added soon, they could be added with this.

waterfalls are actually usually more sloped than you think. water falls are anything from and un raftable, steap rapid, to a drop off like what you are describing.

I LOVE this idea and I hope this gets put into Minecraft because this could be a great building biome and maybe they could add a new aquatic animal like for example : Otter, bever, sward fish, and crab!!! ECT. Please vote on this people!

The Wild Update would be a perfect time to implement this. I'm not sure the technical challenge of creating such a feature, but I imagine rivers could sometimes have a higher y-level and either gradually go back to sea level (like normal rivers) or very suddenly (like waterfalls). Kind of like local water levels.

The problem is that rivers in Minecraft server as more of a biome divider and they often loop and connect. As much as I'd like to see this happen, I'm not sure it's very practical.

This with the new Caves & Cliffs generation, plus the Wild Update, would be amazing and would bring so much more life to the game.  Ever since I started playing Minecraft back in 2012, I remember specifically looking up seeds with waterfall features because they looked so cool.  I've pretty much always wanted them in the game.  Plus, I don't really see it as something needing its own update, since it wouldn't require any new blocks/items and would likely be purely generation based.  Idk if this'll make it into the Wild Update (1.19), but if that's not possible, what about 1.20 or 1.21?

Or maybe just varying river heights.  I don't work on Minecraft, but I can imagine it would be fairly difficult, since river height is likely linked to sea level.  But maybe working with the generation engine for Cave & Cliffs has given Mojang a bit of experience in that field.

If Mojang did want to make it a bigger thing, maybe grizzly bears could spawn near rivers generating in taiga biomes and attack salmon swimming through them.  They'd basically just be brown polar bears in other aspects, though

if its added, why not have it start on a tall hill, Mojang should added splashes, cascades, etc.. with this. and have it turn into the ocean or a river, with a stone outline.

i hope that this will show in some update i would love this. and maybe if there would be a big waterfall then there could be some loot inside it. like that you would go in the waterfall and there would be a cave or some new place and there would be loot.

I admit. a waterfall biome with one or more entry points to a new lush cavern in blue or gold..seeing multiple colors would be a great idea.

Just don't make the wall behind the waterfall completely flat, let it be slightly concave and have cave entrances generate behind it (maybe even as its own structure with loot). It would be cool for the water wheel to move but I don't think that to be likely or possible with how minecraft works and looks/feels atm and I see it just to be an unmoving building design to be a lot more likely (and possibly look cooler and have better performance)
