Have a list of specific but common tasks the Minecraft community engages in as part of normal gameplay. A good place to start would be the list of Achievements/ Advancements, but certainly not the limit. The idea of this list is "most players at one time or another need to solve "X" problem or accomplish "Y" task. "X" and "Y" should be on that list as part of the common "core" Minecraft experience. A set of that list should be "common" or "core" redstone machines.
Use the same list for both Java and Bedrock editions. Have the JAVA devs carry out the list of tasks on the BEDROCK edition, have the BEDROCK dev accomplish this on the JAVA edition.
The whole list need not be done every quarter. The goal is to find COMMON/ CORE features of gameplay where there are differences each dev doesn't notice because they know how THEIR platform "ought to work", but it doesn't work THE SAME on the other version. Look for areas where there are pleasant surprises, shock, or confusion in the test. Then highlight these areas and get further feedback from the respective communities to get "core" behavior from both games to be more the same.
For example, overworld maps in the Nether show "relative overworld position" in Bedrock. Would they be surprised or dismayed when they expect to see this in Java? I sure am. Or when Java devs attempt to build a villager breeder and iron farm in Bedrock, do they encounter surprises? I sure do. There are other examples, but the main point is for the Devs in their respective platforms to have personal awareness of these differences in "common/ core" tasks and how these differences show up for people transitioning from one platform to the other, or who play both platforms as I do.
