This is a response to the request for railway improvements.
It's glaring how Minecraft has railway and no locomotive; furnace cart. Powered rail has its place; in automation of farms. However, to achieve a real mining operation, which we all want, we need the locomotive, furnace cart, to be re-introduced.
Players didn't use furnace carts because they were slow and ran out of fuel by making a U-turn. We need a fast, logical and easy to use locomotive. If done right, driving a locomotive can be a game within the game. Below are ideas for locomotive properties in response to the request for railway improvements:
-Use steam power.
-Lava can also be used as an energy source along with charcoal and coal--each having their normal burn rates.
-One bucket of water can generate steam for three min. Steam will decrease faster with faster speed and incline.
-Indicator in locomotive menu would show how much steam and heat is left.
-Control of the locomotive is critical. Toggle speed (8x speed), braking (with skidding from inertia) and direction (forward/backward) in locomotive menu. Do away with the zigzag rule for furnace carts.
-Locomotive menu can hold 9 buckets of water and 9 sources of fuel; each feeding into their item use slot with water on top and fuel underneath.
-Improve locomotive and cart linking--make a real train. Link and unlink by button selection. Rail cars shouldn't unlink by turning or going uphill.
-Allow painting locomotive with dyes.
-One locomotive can optimally pull 8 fully loaded carts.
-Two linked and powered locomotives can pull 16 loaded carts optimally.
-Speed decreases by one level going uphill.
-One speed level penalty for every two fully loaded carts added beyond the original optimizations.
-Stack carts with chests in inventory, 4 high.
-Sensor rail, railcart type.
