Sounds get muffled if you're underwater, far away or behind a wall

This would be great idea but sounds like a nightmare to make work. Also would add just one more performance thing for computer to use to lag. However, I do wish when you heard a mob in caves you could pinpoint the sound better. Sometime there is a spawner but you can’t tell what direction or how far away. I thought maybe Mojang could alter zombie sounds specifically at least. Maybe they make a lower growl when farther from the player but increase to that more snappy sound they currently make when the player is in certain range. This I think would be a little less intensive work for them and your computer.

YES YES YES and with the new HRTF in the game this could take that to the next level since we'd have surround sound and sound occlusion.

In 1.19 they're adding HRTF audio and if they added this along with it the sounds in this game would be even more incredible

Now that directional audio is a thing this needs to happen!

I heard that Mojang doesn't want to add "ambient" sounds to the game because they want every sound to have a source (ie. if you hear birds in the distance, you should be able to follow the sound and find.. birds!) The problem is that Minecraft sounds are lacking realism. Sounds that are far away, or underground, or behind something, don't really sound as such. This suggestion, if implemented properly, would add that much needed ambience while staying true to Mojang's vision.

Should be easier with 'new' ray-tracing, allowing you to detect blocks between player and sound source.

His would be a great idea because it would give new level of immersion and make the game feel more alive
