Repairing your tools in Minecraft is a necessity for any player who plans on building anything medium or large scale. Currently mending is the only way of doing so renewably.
The only good way to get mending renewably is villagers - this makes villagers an essential part of a minecraft world, even for those who may not want to interact with them because they break the tool economy.
To fix this I propose to remove the increasing anvil repair cost for material repair, buff the amount repaired, and remove it increasing the "work" statistic of the tool. This would allow for a stretched out early-midgame without engaging with villagers - meaning more use of the enchantment table and more use for exploration loot (especially end city tools that may have mending already!).
The following small changes would need to be implemented:
- Fix the level cost for item repair using materials (i.e. diamond pickaxe + diamond). I have found 5 levels to be a good balance.
- Repair does not increase the prior work statistic of the item.
- Buff the repair amount. In my opinion 25% is too small, I would suggest 40%.
There are potentially other ways to fix the tool repair issue but this is what I came up with.
I have a reddit post on r/MinecraftSuggestions called "A Case for fixed Anvil Repair Cost" that goes into more detail (perhaps too much) on my thought process.
