This is talking about a parity change done to Bedrock Edition maps to help them match Java Edition maps. I’m not sure when it was changed due to a lack of posted information.
Maps on Bedrock now show a dot off the map instead of an arrow.
This idea is to help the Villager Trade Rebalance feature work better. New bought maps feel wrong when you don’t know what way to go. Any person traveling these distances for structures is probably end game, and it’s a waste of their time, therefore, not worth it. Any player not end game would still be travelling to new places. Any player using maps as maps wouldn’t get lost as easy.
Possible way to fix #1: map upgrades. This feature would be done in cartography tables, possibly using loadstone compasses, however it could be any block/item. It would simply make a map “known”, so the player doesn’t have to walk hundreds of blocks just to have an idea of what they are doing. This would hopefully also work on structure maps.
Possible way to fix #2: complete revert. This would just put maps to the way they have always been, even a fix on Java to make it more like how Bedrock used to be. This would be preferable, but optional.
Overall, I think exploration in Minecraft is already being solved with Villager Trade Rebalancing, but bad maps are a setback that will keep people in one spot. I really hope that Mojang or someone of power sees this and considers doing something to make the game better.
