Since characters can take damage from sinking into snow, it would be nice to have few crafting recipes to give cold resistance, similar to fire resistance. Cold damage could be applied into the game just for travelling in snowy areas (maybe while snowing?) This would allow cold damage to be amplified for harder difficulty levels, making snowy areas more challenging, if one has not taken "proper preparations". It would increase the complexity of surviving in different biomes in the game, just like deserts could have heat damage, but that's another issue. Here are three suggestions I have for better survival for cold climates with items that pretty much already exist in Minecraft:
1) Cold resistance potion, like fire resistance.
2) Hot Cocoa: milk, sugar, and cocoa bean (+ bucket?) recipe , to give short term cold resistance. (Why not, if you can "bake" bread, cookies, and cake in crafting table!)
3) Fleece lined leather armor: add wool to leather armor crafting. Won't increase the armor rating for regular damage, but gives a long term cold resistance (increasing amount based on how many fleece lined armor are equipped). This way it makes leather armor more useful than just "beginner armor" and people have to make a choice between cold resist or damage resist.
