I'm curious, if the change were instead that the single-axis speed was buffed to match the current diagonal speed, would that be an acceptable outcome?

Obviously, slowing down the diagonal movement speed is 100% bad and if the choices were between keeping the nerfs or reverting them, I'd be completely on board with reverting it. But if the developers bumped up the one-axis speed to match the diagonal speed would that be just as bad?

And don't answer with "If they wanted to change it, they should have done it years ago" as that's not the question I'm asking. It seems to me they want to change the movement and are doing it now despite the fact it's been in the game for years. I'm just asking if the change was a buff instead of a nerf would it still have a negative impact on the game?

Mojang is so unbelievably disconnected from the community, and it shows.

bugs being in the game that actually annoy people: not fixed

a bug in the game for almost 10 years that has become a part of the game's identity: "GuYs We GoTtA fIX tHIs"

Microsoft just doesn't know what Minecraft is. It's as much its existing community as it is new players. New players won't know about any of this, but regular, returning and especially PVP players will be impacted by these changes. Lowering the skill ceiling makes streaming these games more boring, less attractive and will make it perform worse from a marketing standpoint, which hurts the game over time too. And pushing these changes to get parity with Bedrock alienates a lot of us. Why must the Java edition change? Why can't Bedrock be a more faithful copycat instead?

Yes, it was a "bug" Mojang, but it's a bug that the Minecraft community has grown with. And it overall just helps players have a better and smoother experience playing. So please Mojang, revert this change so everyone who likes this "bug" doesn't have to miss out on future updates in order to have more fun with player movement.

Mojang, this "bug" has been in the game for 15 years, obviously if a bug would exist for such a long time, players will count it as a feature. This is going to hurt parkour, speedbriding and pvp communities in Minecraft. Parkour players have spent countless hours perfecting their 45 strafes to make before impossible jumps possible. Ang parkour maps made in this timeframe of 15 years utilizing the use of 45 strafes would be now impossible to beat. Speedbriding is a technique where players require precise timings to place their blocks while shifting, a 40% speed decrease in that is going to be brutal to those who generally play competitive games using briding like bedwars and skywars. For those who spent time perfecting their aim with diagonal moving to get just a little bit more knockback would end. Whether this change gets implemented in the final version or not, its going to be insignificant to an average survival player but will hurt the more competitive side of the game. So when a change is just a net loss for the game, I strictly believe it should not be implemented. On top of all that its not a gamebreaking exploit or something and many games purposefully implement it too. I hope you learned at least something from 1.9 update.

the obsession mojang seems to have with java and bedrock parity is moronic and doesnt make sense.

I think it's highly insane of Mojang/Microshaft to make what they call "parity changes" to the Java version of the game.
Instead of bringing terrible Bedrock Nerfs to Java, Java Buffs should be applied to the infinitely worse and borderline unplayable Bedshlock version of the game. Imagine if Redstone worked right on bedrock, or y'know like if anything worked right in bedrock?

But no, all of the effort must now be put into making Java worse, I'm sure so Daddy Microsoft can shove the marketplace down our throats and try and force us to buy mods that are free on Java.

At this point, 45-strafing (especially while sprinting) is seen as a feature, not a bug. It's just a fundamental part of the movement system, and changing it really gains nothing.
I'm not really a parkour player, I mostly play survival and do redstone. But this still feels like it will affect me negatively, just making building slower in general. There's no positive here.
If you really find it important enough to remove the "unintuitive" nature of having diagonals be faster than straights, I think it would be somewhat reasonable to just buff the sneaking speed to always be the same as with strafing. That would leave people not randomly slowed down and frustrated by the change (particularly casual players), and any strategies involving diagonal movements could continue to be used without messing with pro player's muscle memories.

I used to play Minecraft so much over the years, PvP being most of it. Bedwars, eggwars, PvP Legacy, anything, any version. I've stopped playing now, but hearing that Mojang is pretty much going to completely ruin something that I, and many, many other people love, make a change to something that's been in the game for a decade at this point, just because? It makes no sense.

If this goes through, I am not updating. I am sure many agree, it is the same issue with QC being considered a bug. All it seems to do is fix a minor issue at the cost of high level play, which makes a game's longevity shorter. There is a reason people still play melee but do not play ultimate, for an example. Or how the 1.9 split lasted forever for similar changes to combat. Movement is tightly conjoined by combat, modify one, you modify the other. Wind Charges as an example are a combat item for the mace, but also allow for better movement.

Truly a mid and soulless bugfix. The person who forwarded this bugfix either has no idea what speed-bridging is or how this change affects parkour.

Unless they knew this was a thing and was told to specifically target this just for bs garbage parity with the bedrock edition movement system.

Vote and stop Microsoft flushing Java edition down the toilet.

All parkour maps will be affected by these changes in some way. There are many servers, minr.org for example, that contain maps that are over TEN YEARS old that will be broken by this change. I swear to the lord above, I'm already annoyed I have to switch to 1.8.9 for combat changes that they refuse to fix, if I have to also stay in 1.21.4 for parkour I'm going to be annoyed. If you wanted to make this change, you should have changed it in 1.0. This is a feature that will exist forever. If you remove it, the parkour community shall stay on 1.21.4, and you shall fracture the community in three.

Minecraft- the game everyone says perfected videogame movement

Mojang- lets fundamentally change that, and now thousands of maps are imposable to complete, e.g parkour, this is what the people want right?

This is quite possibly the dumbest change I have ever seen. I don't even play competitively and this annoys me. The movement changes in general that have been pushed are so counterintuitive and divisive that they should not be implemented whatsoever; we have precedent for what happens here in the Combat Update. Please reconsider this horrendous mistake.

These changes are completely unacceptable, I am not a developer at Mojang so I do not know their thought process, however, I will say that the way this change was implemented could have been so much better. This all most likely falls down to Bedrock-Java parody. Diagonal movement on Bedrock Edition is slower than it is on Java, so I can understand why they did it this way, but the better way would have been to make it slightly faster on Bedrock Edition.

This needs to be changed back. IMMEDIATELY.
This isn't a "paradoy" change. This is just destroying survival, parkour and general movement of the game.
