Since they probably want to make this change then just place the keep inventory option under the difficulty option so new players can see it and choose themselves to turn it off/on without having to look for the other menu which would mean achievements would be attainable using keep inventory on any difficulty which I think is fine.

Good change, but I suggest you to decouple XP / levels from Keep Inventory and lose that on death instead on Easy mode.

As someone who has a survival server where the players vary wildly in age, this is a good change.  Younger and less experienced players have a lot of trouble with losing their items, and older or more experienced players mostly find regaining their items to be annoying. Turning on Keep Inventory resulted in younger players having a much better time, and older players liked not having to worry about grinding for rare gear (such as the mace) again if something happened to them.

However, we have noticed that players sometimes use it as a free teleport home button - which is probably not in line with how you want players to interact with death. Having some consequence like losing your XP would solve this to a certain extent. We tried implementing this with command blocks but it was rather buggy so we stopped, but when it worked it was a good compromise.

On the whole, I would like to see significantly more options around player death be surfaced by player / server settings. More granular settings for player death would be useful for getting community feedback as well.

I think a middle ground would make the most sense. The easiest way would be a death chest (it would function slightly differently to a normal chest) or gravestone, you still lose your items but there's no chance of them de-spawning.

Mojang, I like the idea of the keep inventory being on for easy & peaceful, but I have 2 suggestions. 1: Make it togglable. Make so that if you enable easy or peaceful, you have the option to toggle keep inventory on or off. Number two and I think the better one, Make it so that if you die in peaceful or easy you only loose non valuable items, such as blocks. You don't loose items such as tools and armor. I found this from a mod, and if you want to see it, it's called Keep Equipment, which you can find on Curseforge if you want to check it out.

I agree that this would keep more players at the game, but to take keep inventory out of the cheats section would be bad.

I can see it: A player falls in lava on normal difficulty. In a panicked state, the leave the game and change the gamemode to peaceful. They rejoin, respawn, change to normal, and continue as if it never happened. I play peaceful most of the time. It takes the stress out of the game. But if you add this, I will no longer be able to play peaceful.

The entire difficulty system needs an overhaul.

Hard difficulty has to be actually harder and making it just so that mobs do more damage feels lazy a lot, with difficulty, the mobcap should increase, the chance for armor should increase more, maybe even enemy reach should increase if they have tools/weapons. Maybe it could even increase the range of mob detection when you try to sleep etc.

Also PLEASE make turning villagers turn into zombies possible on all difficulties since the fact that it can only be done on hard makes no sense at all.

I think there should be an option to keep tools only and drop all materials on death, and make it an option to turn it off without it being considered "cheating"

I think it should just be not in cheats but not on by default for easy and peaceful. They should still earn achievements by playing with keep inventory. The people who play with keep inventory do it because it makes it more fun for them, but not everyone shares that view so you shouldn't force it on somebody.

If the issue is with achievements, then keep inventory should be not considered a cheat. Terraria has a similar mechanic where you can choose your difficulty (Classic, Expert, Master), but also player difficulty (Softcore- keep inventory, mediumcore- drop items on death, and hardcore- only one life). This allows many different combinations to make different runs more suited to player preferences. The increased difficulty customization gives every player choice about their world. Minecraft is a sandbox, these things should be customizable.

Making changes to how difficulties work? Perfectly fine. Giving people more options? Perfectly fine.

Merging two pre-existing features that have nothing to do with eachother... why? I say this as someone who loves keepinventory, but this is just a bad idea.

I love the idea of putting in a toggle near difficulty for things like keeping enchantment levels or keepinventory. I don't love having to go to a higher difficulty to play without keepinv, or not being able to play harder difficulties if I want keepinv. There are players who will not want both keepinventory and a lower difficulty at the same time. This is removing a decent amount of choice from those players (and I would assume that it's no small number of them.)

So if there were just an option to have keepinventory there without it being a cheat, that'd be awesome. This preview doesn't really differentiate the difficulties at all, it just tacks something onto the two lowest ones. It doesn't make sense to me. The game difficulties don't really have anything to do with keepinventory. They're unrelated.

To be honest, I think that it's fine for PEACEFUL but not okay for EASY.

I get that there's other styles to playing the game but the core game involves consequences and that's losing items when you die. you take risks and lose stuff and join millions of others who feel that same loss.

It might also be worth changing what achievements can be unlocked with this enabled since it does make achievements easier and therefore worth less in the long run.

I think this is a good change, since it makes the game less intimidating to less experienced players. New players are less likely adjust the game rules of their world for their first play-through, and may not be aware that Keep Inventory is an option (and how consequential it is). I would support it coming to Java edition too, as long as Keep Inventory remains toggleable, so people can still customize their experience.

i think its good for peaceful mode, but for easy i think you should keep some items just randomly

There should definitely be an option to toggle keep inventory in all game modes. But allowing players to still earn achievements with keep inventory toggled in peaceful/easy modes would be a nice addition.

Good idea, just think it would be good if you could turn it off optionalky, even on easy and peaceful

it is good ONLY if you remove the "keep inventory" out of the cheats tab and let us have the control of turning it on or off (only in easy or peaceful mode)

I like this for Easy Difficulty, but the in-game difficulty which would need to be slightly modified.

    My Idea:
Make it so you can't swap game difficulty in Normal/Hard mode and Keep Inventory is off, and in Easy Mode you CAN swap to Peaceful-Hard and when on Easy (Toggled) Keep Inventory is ON and when toggled to Normal/Hard Keep Inventory is OFF.

In the future, Normal and Hard could use a rework so the Normal difficulty is something typical Normal/Hard players would gravitate towards, and Hard has an extra challenge for experienced players (that doesn't have Hardcore death)

Although im kinda the type of person to play with KeepInventory True, i think that KeepInventory should continue to be counted as a cheat, because it is.

Bad idea. If your going to add this it needs to be disableable. Don't force people to either play with keep inventory or play with a higher difficulty. Settings they're a product!

I think it would just be better to have a toggle next to world creation or near difficulty to enable or disable keepinventory instead of it being bound to peaceful and easy. I think there could also be additional difficulty setting like permanently loosing your inventory on death to make the game more challenging, and making you consider what you bring with you every time you leave your house in the game.
I don't really think keepinventory is really considered a cheat anymore, its more of a difficulty setting.

As a Java player that have used Keep Inventory sometimes, mostly on multiplayer servers. I think keep the "keep inventory" a toggle for players, if they want to have that difficulty of losing their stuff or not.

I also feel instead you should test out ways to expand the death system more, because currently dying is a bit too punishing sometimes. Which is why a good amount of people turn on keep inventory in the first place.

Note, I do not have an answer for the advancement discussion on this.

I see Keep Inventory as a very helpful accessibility option, especially for newer players, but also players who just don't want to have to deal with losing all of their items. So I do like Keep Inventory becoming a non-cheat feature, but I think it should be kept optional while not being labelled as a cheat, although maybe for Peaceful & Easy it should be turned on by default, but the option to turn it off is still kept for players who want easier difficulties without that feature being forced.

For the two harder difficulties (Normal & Hard) I do think Keep Inventory should still be a non-cheat option, but potentially how it works is different from the other two difficulties. As an example, dying in Normal or Hard with Keep Inventory on will still cause you to drop items in your inventory but certain inventory slots, such as the armour slots and hotbar, are kept upon death, which will encourage players to engage with inventory management and still keep some form of punishment upon death. And as an extra, you could also have 'full' Keep Inventory for the classic Keep Inventory experience as it exists now for those who want it.

My thoughts are that if Keep Inventory is no longer considered a cheat then move it to a main page option and by default have it off for all difficulties except peaceful.

This is really good, difficulty in Minecraft feels lackluster, but we could improve this by a lot.

    Firstly, regarding the KeepInventory change, I think it should go like this;

    • Upon dying in Peaceful mode you should keep 2/3 of your inventory *2/3 of your XP you keep*
    • Upon dying in Easy mode you should keep 1/3 of your inventory *1/3 of your XP you keep*

This way it isn't you lose everything, but you lose mostly everything, allowing to feel less frustrating, but also not just extremely easy, and death having no penalty. And yes, you can always go back and pick-up your items you lost.

In-terms of the main difficulty, changes should be made, and maybe not all just for making it harder.

    • Peaceful: 2/3 of your inventory you keep upon death, 0.0x mob spawn multiplier, 0.5x hostile mob damage multiplier 0.5x hostile mob health, 1.5x ores, 0.75x XP multiplier.
    • Easy: 1/3 of your inventory you keep upon death, 0.5x mob spawn multiplier, 0.75x hostile mob damage multiplier 0.75x hostile mob health, 1.25x ores, 0.75x XP multiplier.
    • Normal: None of your inventory you keep upon death, 1.0x mob spawn multiplier, 1.0x hostile mob damage multiplier 1.0x hostile mob health, 1.0x ores 1.0x XP multiplier.
    • Hard: None of your inventory you keep upon death, 1.5x mob spawn multiplier, 1.5x hostile mob damage multiplier 1.5x hostile mob health, 0.75x ores 1.25x XP multiplier.

This is a much more balanced version of difficulties, and probably will separate every one. *There will still be hidden changes as well!*

I would enjoy this change if it was presented as an option that you could toggle when choosing the difficulty. Not as a cheat, as it is now, but just an option. Maybe word it better, or put it in a more accessible place for new players to find, but I don't think it should be automatically forced. I believe this change could break certain experiences if, for example, keep inventory is set to true when switching difficulties in game from harder difficulties to easy or peaceful. This could also break certain minigames.

Tl;dr, I think that the option to keep inventory should be more prominently displayed as an option, not a cheat, during world creation but not a forced default when selecting or changing a difficulty.

As cool of an option as this would be, I think it's important to recognize that Peaceful might not necessarily mean Easy. There could be players who enjoy the PVP aspect of MC that don't want to deal with mobs on a certain world, and forcing KeepInventory on for that mode could cause problems with that. I think it makes the most sense to have it as an option in the world creation process that can also be enabled/disabled later on should the players desire; but keep the default to OFF for all difficulties.
