First before I share my suggestion, I am unsure if this goes in the "Blocks, Tools, and Items" category or another, my apologies.
So the basic idea here is I think it could make sense for bookshelves to be capable of storing either a single map or a stack of 64 paper in each of its four sides. The slots would be generally invisible to players.
The logic behind this suggestion:
1. This could give bookshelves another unique property and use besides being used to strengthen enchanting tables, and to be a decorative block.
2. This could allow for storage of paper and maps, as well as any future paper-based items, that is more intricate and immersive.
3. This could allow bookshelves to be used in redstone as a container (similar to other containers, however this should work differently in comparison to chiseled bookshelves).
4. This could enable bookshelves to be used in paper farms, in such a way that it can cause a unique building to be functional without the farm being obviously out of place. (This is due to bookshelves already being a full block unlike chests. Barrels are another block that would work, but it may not fit in something like a library)
5. This could build up more variety in the recent trend of unique blocks and items storing a slot worth of items, in various unique ways (Examples of this include; Decorated Pots which can store a single stack of items, and Bundles which can store a single stack of multiple different items.).
